Im hoping for some advice on changing utility companies for my new property - completed yesterday!

It is currently with a company called PODO (through the previous owners), but i was wanted to change it to Iberdrola - as I understand Iberdrola are much more English-language friendly.  Plus they are offering a plan - 8-hour plan - which allows a better € rate for whichever 8 hours one chooses (and which can be amended online etc, so pretty flexible).  And they are also offering a €60 incentive to take out one of their plans.  Not to be sniffed at! :-)

My lawyers office were organising the utilities to be put into my name, to help me out.  However the lady dealing with this for me has advised the following.

I have talked with IBERDROLA about the subject , I have also tried to change the owner of the contract through the website, but it is not possible. The only way to benefit from the discount of 60 euros is to make a new contract, canceling the current contract in PODO company. But the new registration has a cost of approximately 140 euros, when the change of the owner has no cost. I think it's not worth paying 140 euros to get a discount of 60 euros, but the decision is yours. Please let me know when you decide.Im hoping someone will be kind enough to let me know their thoughts.  Im assuming that the contract with the previous owners has nothing to do with me, so I shouldnt pay any cancellation fee there.  And then to register with a new supplier .. they are offering €60 incentive, so not logical that they would also charge €140 to register with them.Im probably missing the obvious! :-)

Hi there Leafy,

I recently changed from Iberdrola to Siesta Electric. As they were cheaper. All done by them at no cost.

It might be worth shopping around before you make your decision.

Ahh thanks Andy.  Its a tricky one for me to shop around as Ive never had a utility bill in Spain before, so not sure what my usage will be etc.  In addition to if I eventually let the flat...  Would you say the Kwh price for Siesta are just generally better than Iberdrola?  And standing charges seem horribly high too with Iberdrola, i must admit!

Hi Leafy

The rates were cheaper for me i've saved about 12%.

Can you not ask your lawyer for a copy of a latest bill for the property which can use as a rate comparison.

There are lot of helpful people on this Forum, who will give you some good information.

So dont jump yet, see if you get some more replies with other helpful info

Hi Leafy, have you asked at your Lawyers office if there is an outstanding debt on the existing PODO contract from the previous owner . If so this should be settled by the retention fee held from the previous owner. This  140 euro amount could possibly be a  New Customer deposit fee, based on the fact Iberdrola would have not any previous record of bill payments at your Property. This deposit would be payable up front prior to agreement of a new Contract and repayable at the end of such a Contract.

Iberdrola do have English speaking Staff and you could also call in to speak to them. You would need your Passport , N.I.E, and some Property Title related paperwork. . By doing this you could  discuss with them to clarify the reason for this charge.
