we bought a gas barbecue and need a propane gas bottle.  The petrol stations refuse to sell us one if we don’t return a used one.  Where can we either get a used one that we would trade in or what is the process to get a new one ?

It would be cheaper to buy an empty bottle to use for a swap, which are usually advertised on here at €10.

Otherwise take the purchase receipt to a Repsol or Cepsa office and pay full price for a new bottle.

Thanks.  Would you know where to get a used one ?

Look on any market or Rastro, there are always empty ones to be found for about €8-10 then take it to a garage and swap it for a full one. No contract needed.

More often than not there will be one for sale on here.  Aim to get one with a plastic coloured top.  They are lighter than the ones without.

Always look for a bottle that is the same as your nearest garage.  Less travelling.

Note.  For a BBQ it doesn't matter if it's propane or butane.  The same regulator fits both.   (Butane won't come out below freezing point, worth remembering if you have outside gas bottles for your indoor cooker).

Agree totally with above. Inland, the price ( in a rastro eg;) were about 5euros. ( On the coast 10e). There were "gluts" of them. I must have given free away over the years. There seems to be a secret thief collecting the empty bottles ( left o/side for collection!). It is worth noting that the bottles ( Repsol/Cepsa, etc) remain & belong to the company & are not legally saleable 😇😂😂. V

A few points:

In my area, the gas stockists will swap a butane bottle for propane, and vice versa.

Repsol propane bottles are steel, without any plastic, and coloured orange with a black band round them.

Cepsa propane bottles may be all aluminium, or have a blue plastic top on them.

At the moment the price for an 11 kg propane bottle is €14.02, but that can be varied every two months.

Dealers are likely to charge a 'handling' fee on top of that price.

The weight of the Repsol bottles is why I don't use them.

As you say the Cepsa ones have a blue top for propane and a red top for butane, the exact opposite to the UK.

The Cepsa stainless butane bottles are also of a lighter construction but I don't see many of them these days. They might be replacing them.  There are never any at my local garage nowadays.

Cepsa also have the heavier grey propane bottles like Repsol, but I avoid them.
