Before researching into other areas of Spain, I was very interested in living in Villajoyosa. However, not visiting there as yet, I've tried to find peoples' experiences of living there via online, forums, Fbook, etc but there is never much to go on.

Is Villajoyosa a no-no in many peoples opinion? I just wonder why this area isn't discussed about much?

I'm seeking a Spanish working town/tourist/fishing town with character, plenty of restaurants, shops, a good few beaches and tram line to explore other villages/towns.

If you are or have lived in Villajoyosa please share your experiences 🙂

I rather think it’s a place you drive through. Fifty years ago it was a dusty street with a few shops and a chocolate cafe!

It’s obviously changed, I dont live particularly near it. But when we’ve been through it recently on a few occasions it strikes me as various housing estates and the usual assortment of shed type shops on the outskirts. Your best solution would be to visit.

Lovely beach, old town and parks at the southern end near the river.  Wide variety of cafes and restaurants on the waterfront, plenty of shops just up the hill from there, tram line runs through it, easy to get around the area using the N332 and motorway.  Amazing mountains just a few miles inland.  Great place in my opinion.

Probably not mentioned much on this forum because there aren't any sprawling urbanisations nearby, just ordinary Spanish housing with a wide mix of residents.

Take a look on Google Maps and Street View and you'll  be able to get a feel for it even without visiting.

Thank you so much for all your info 🙂 I've been researching quite a bit on Google maps and videos on Fbook/youtube. It looks very much what I want, I don't want to live on an urbanisation, instead to be more central in an apartment, immersing myself with the Spanish.

I lived in Barcelona for approx 18 months back in the mid 90's and loved the vibe of the old streets and authentic Spain.

Although I know it's not Barcelona! I do like the way Villajoyosa looks like a Spanish town and is still functioning all year around.

I see from your profile you are in Finestrat. Is that the beach area or the inland village itself? Assuming your not Spanish, how do you find life as a foreigner there?

Thanks for your time...

Villajoyosa is good with an excellent beach and restaurants along the promenade. It has very good access to the motorways and the walking behind Finestrat and Sella is outstanding. Best to rent and check the area out. There are Bungalows on Camping Imperium which you can rent for a good price. Hire a car and then you can get to know the area before commiting. I dont think there is the same UK community like say Calpe or Denia.

Thank you for your reply. When I lived in Barcelona years ago I was around gypsies and I too had no worries with them. I will visit of course first ( along with other areas I want to check out) but would probably be seeking living more in the centre as want to be around 'life', amenities and think will be more chance of getting to know the locals.

Thanks Stephanie, I will be sure to visit and possibly stay for a few weeks 'out of season to get a feel of the place.

My list of 'check it out' is growing! I've got Guardamar del Segura on my list, Santa Pola, La Nucia, Oliva and Gandia so far!
