Hi

My husband and I are planning to come to Spain ASAP we will be bringing our dog with us

Obviously a pet passport is required, jabs, chipped and rabies and it just seems to easy - our vet can carry out the necessary and produce documentation/ passport

Does Spain have any other requirements that we should prepare ourselves for

Advice grateful received plus any good rental agents that would allow pets would be of assistance

Many thanks

Gail

We brought our dog to Spain with us when making the permanent move, no problem as long as all vaccinations done and detailed on the Pet Passport, one point of possible concern is the breed of dog as Spain has very strict rules for a list of what they consider to be dangerous breeds which can be very different from what you may consider to be a dangerous breed.

Hi John56

Thank you for your prompt response

Point one - So all jabs /chipped/and rabies jab= pet passport produced by our vets.

No blood tests? It wasn’t clear when googling, just rabies injection at least 21days before?!

Point two - she is a medium, well mannered Staffordshire Terrier, I am guessing sadly with their reputation she may be defined on the list although more likely to lick you to death! Worst case a mussel?

If you are able to advise I would be grateful

She is also with Pet Plan here in the UK but not sure who would be a similarly good standard and cover in Spain, she is getting on a bit now 11 years old, some say don’t bother as vets are very cheap compared to uk? Thoughts

Thanking you in advance

Gail

Point one. Your vet in the UK will be able to keep you right on all the requirements.

Point two. Not sure about the list of breeds but know from speaking to other people it is extensive and takes no account of the dogs temprament, a muzzle is a definite requirement if on the list.

We are in La Zenia and use either Eduardos Vets at EL Galan or the resident vets at our nearest Petsworld, both highly recommended, if there is a Petsworld near you try it, certainly they are all much less expensive than in the UK and we felt Pet Plan was unnecessary.

Hi Gail2020

The Staffie is on the list of potentially dangerous dogs. A muzzle is the way to go in public places. I used to have my bull terrier with me when I visited Spain and I always had his muzzle on as the police were very keen when they saw me walking him, they used to think he was a pit bull, as he was a big boy weighing 35kg and looked even bigger against my 5 foot frame. Some people will tell you it doesn’t matter if your dog isn’t muzzled, however they won’t be the ones paying the fine!

Enjoy your visit with your dog.

Hi Gail,

I'd also recommend asking your vet how much they charge for the Leishmaniasis vaccination - it's about Eu 50 here, but that includes a blood test to check that your woof isn't already infected.  Leishmaniasis is endemic in southern Europe, around the Mediterranean basis. If she should be bitten by an infected Sandfly Mosquito, the symptoms may be mild, but in the worst cases it can also be fatal.  I'd also suggest getting a Seresto collar for her - they're about Eu 27 for a larger dog, last 7-8 months and are waterproof; combined with the vaccine, is the best defence to Leish' that you're likely to get.  I get them from Tiendanimal or Kiwoko pet stores:

Kind regards,

Kim

Sorry Kim, to correct your price on the Leishmania vaccination for a small dog, I was quoted 65€ by two vets this week.

Thanks John - our Eddie had his done 4 years ago, followed by annual boosters, so I expect prices have gone up (although I remember someone last year saying that their UK vet charged them £150).  When he had his initial vaccination, there were two regimes available - a single vaccine, which was more expensive, but meant he had immunity sooner (the one we opted for) and also a regime where they have 3 injections with 2 week intervals, and that one was cheaper.  Coincidentally, he's having his booster on Monday, so I'll double check the price options and update this thread.

UPDATE:  Eddie had his Leish' booster as planned and, John, you're right, the price has definitely increased - as per the recent quotes you've received, Ed's booster cost €65.  For dogs not previously vaccinated, the blood test has also increased - from the €15 we paid 3 years ago, to €45, so a combined cost of €110, although possibly still cheaper  than  the UK.  Annual blood tests are not required, so long as you don't exceed the date of the annual anniversary.  Also, our vet no longer offers the cheaper regime that takes longer to become effective.

Kind regards,

Kim
