If you only come over a few times a year, I can't see how the costs of buying a car stack up against hiring.

As well as the initial cost, you'd have to factor in - insurance, maintenance, road tax, MOT if 3 years old or more, depreciation and possibly long term parking. Plus all the hassle of arranging that every year.

In my opinion, hiring is a lot easier and cheaper.

Jack. Much appreciated. Were coming over for 2months start of August and car hire is just over €1000 hence question. We did manage a good number trips last year but also got good deals on car hire. I think on balance your right albeit the car would be used by family. Many thanks

Hi

We are in a similar situation as Grahame, we bought our 9 yr old second hand car In Jan 2019 from a car garage in Spain. The car garage arranged all the paper work for us and arranged the car insurance which is 340 euros yearly (the family use it when they come out) Alicante airport parking 299 euros (they arrange service and ITV on request)

We previously hired for 5 years when we visited Spain, never had any problems with Gold Cars because we took out their insurance but it was getting more expensive by the year hence we bit the bullet and purchased our own transport. Everyone needs to make their own choices on their own needs. Take care.

Regards

Jim

The car we bought was purchased from Global cars (their web pages explain all their services) who I would highly recommend from my experience purchasing from them. We bought a 2009 Ford Focus estate for 4950 euros with only 85500km on the clock Jan last year. Purchasing from this company in any January, they offer free parking at Alicante airport for a year, paid the tax change over and arranged the insurance plus the usual 1 year warranty major parts and labour came with the car. We are lucky the car (touch wood) hasn’t given us any problems to date. The car company is an English family run business and Alicante airport personnel are fantastic to deal with and have never let us down. Again this only my experience and others views could be completely different.

Regards

 Jim

You call it the MOT but in Spain it is the ITV, you say three years but it is four years and up to when it is ten year old the ITV lasts for two years each time it is tested and after that annually.
