Registering my own UK purchased car in Spain

I think that I will stay with keeping the car in Spain on UK Plates for under 6 months

The system changed in May, and if the car has a current MOT, it won't need a new ITV test.

It seems to me I would be better off keeping it registered in the UK and only taking it to Spain for six months.

Having a RHD in Spain will cause problems with tolls and car parks and will probably mean you will be stopped in every police roadside check and Brexit is not likely to make things any easier. I guess the first 6 months in Spain will help you make the best choice for you.

I've been driving backwards and forwards for two years on UK plates and never been stopped, probably because I'm legal, tolls and car parks are only a problem if on your own.

Thanks for this information. This is very useful.  We have just recently bought a property in Alicante, and are non-residents.  Living in France, we already have a LHD car. From what people are saying, it seems that cars are more expensive in Spain than in the UK and France... as I've got an old car with very little kilometrage on it, we are doing the research as to whether it would be viable to 'export' it to Spain at a later date rather than buying in Spain...... I'm a bit confused about the information on the website as it would seem that in so doing, you are 'declaring' yourself a permanent resident in Spain? (which we would not be...)..

Just wondering if there are any expats who are not-resident who bought a car from another EU country and left it in Spain, and wondering what their experiences are regarding insurance etc.... On French forum most French say it's against the law to register a car in a country where you are not actually resident.... so all a bit confusing sometimes!! thanks for any advice!

We had 2 RH re registered cars in Spain for 20 years, no problems with police.

Can confirm this information -we're planning on doing it with our French reg car in October.. still cheaper than hiring a car every time we visit, and legally would need to drive the car back to France every time for the MOT...
