hi

my passport runs out at the end of June 2020 and I want to come over to my apartment for a weekend for my birthday at the end of January.

I have been told I need 6 months left on my passport from the day I return to the UK.

I have also been told as long as my passport is still in date it doesnt matter how long I have left on it. 🤔

I have looked on UK government website and other sites and get conflicting information.

I will be returning to the UK before the 31 January.

I want to get my new passport later in 2020 if brecit ever happens.

thanks

As usual it all depends on Brexit, and after that you need 6 months validity before travelling.

Use the passport checker to make sure:

Post Brexit the validity of a UK passport will become 10 years FROM THE DATE OF ISSUE so if your date of travel is more than 9 years 6 months past its issue date then it will not be valid for travel and from what you've said that's what I expect the checker to be telling you.

New passports being issued are only for that duration, the days of having up to 9 months of an expiring passport added to a new one are over.

The sensible thing to do then would be to renew very soon if not immediately.

As is the way with these things as the day approaches you can pretty well guarantee that the Passport Office is going to be overwhelmed with panicking Brits who suddenly realise that their passports are not valid and desperately try to do what they should have done months before!

Pre-Brexit, all you need is for your passport to be valid for the length of your stay.

I would however check if the airline you intend to travel with impose any additional requirements.

I agree with Jim Taylor, I had the same dilemma when traveling on Holiday for a week, I only had a month left on mine I Contacted passport office and they confirmed as long it is valid for the duration of my holiday.
