Hi my husband and I are hoping to relocate to Villa Martin within the next 12 - 16 weeks (if all goes to plan). We have 2 cats and a German shepherd to bring over with us from the UK. We have heard it is least stressful for the animals on the boat to Santander then drive to villa Martin from there. Can anyone give any advice please as this is proving to be the most stressful part of organising the move. And advice on paperwork, passports required for them, any information would be grateful appreciated. We need the best possible care for our 2 rescue cats and don’t want to stress them out too much. Thanks

Hi we moved over in 2016. We brought our springer spaniel with us. We had a man with a van who was recommended to us by someone from this forum.  He brought our household belongings and our dog. He did the Santander route and took 3 days. We then flew and it gave us a couple of days to get organised before they arrived.  The man was excellent with our dog and he wasn't stressed when he arrived in Spain. We had to get a pet passport if you talk to the vet they will advise you what vaccination they need, you have to do it for at least a couple of months before you travel. Good luck.

Good morning,

We brought our two cats in a dog crate in the back of a van (Way To Go Hire - Javea) we had a driver which made it better for us.  The only problem I had was at Portsmouth - when we gave the customs control our passports, no problem but the cats! well it was January, 6am and dark, I was given a microchip scanner, I had to get into the back of the van with a torch, close the shutter, open the crate a couple of inches 9the cats were scared obviously, and scramble around in the large dog crate desperately trying to scan the cats, I managed one and gave it to the customs lady, fine - then again or so I thought, apparently I had scanned the same cat twice! - it took a long time and well seemed totally silly.  They had passports, all the innoculations, rabies etc were counterstamped by the vet.  It seemed cumbersome and time consuming - I will say the driver was great and very patient.

Your vet will be able to guide you through the whole pet passport thing, time is of the essence, as there has to be elapsed time after the rabies jab has been given, whilst you don't have to wait 21 days before having the blood test ( as you are not returning to the UK) you still need to have time after the injection to revisit the vet for the fit to travel certificate. I am taking it that all your pets are up to date with their standard injections, otherwise that has to be factored into your plans.

Also the crates have to be the correct size for the animal, you can look this up online or speak to your vet for guidance.

It won't be cheap when we relocated we were able to book our Yorkie on the same flight as us, cost us nearly £800, including all the paperwork.

If your taking the 24 hour ferry book well in advance for a pet friendly cabin.  I was looking 6-8 weeks in advance and I couldn’t get one.  We are doing the travel on Monday via eurotunnel.  Charlie has had his passport since last year and had a once over by the vet last week.  Hoping to be Albir on the 2nd with 2 overnight stays.

As recommended above,  your vet will advise you best of what is required jabs wise but do it sooner rather than later.

Best of luck 🍀 🇪🇸

Have brought my GSDS over a few times, not got cats. I always use cross channel and travel with dog in my car. I use Portsmouth Le Havre as dog goes into pet friendly cabin with me, she does not like kennels on boat and Eurotunnel is out of my way. Journey through France takes 1 day, France to Villamartin 1 day. When here remember not only rabies but also tics (Scalibor collar?) heartworm and leschmanosis, both inoculable. Local vet will advise you - I recommend Eduardos as Los Dolses
