Change your Sterling to Euros in the UK at a bank or PO,but probably best to shop around a bit locally for the best rate.

I wouldn't change it in Spain as I doubt if you will get as competitive a rate and you may be faced with steep commission fees.

Whatever you do the Sterling/Euro rate is pretty grim at the moment being about £1 = E1.06 ish at the moment.

The £ fell off a cliff when we voted to leave the Euro and has barely recovered since!

Best of Luck

Jonny

Thanks Jonny, although I haven't been to Spain for a long time and tend to go to other areas outside the Euro zone,I have found that I get a better exchange rate buying locally, wherever I go,rather than buying in the UK but what you have said does make sense.I take it the Euro will be worth the same wherever you buy it in the Eurozone plus the commission so a better deal can be had in the UK.

the rate here today is €1.105, I used to travel over to Spain from the UK every two months and always changed my Sterling in Spain. Eurochange have branches everywhere and their rates are what you get, no hidden commission charges

If you have a Nationwide FlexPlus account you get the commercial exchange rate and commission free cash withdrawals. Same with their credit card, commercial rate on purchases and no commission. Lloyds  Bank Avios rewards credit card, again no foreign transactions fees and commercial rate. Pay for most things on credit card and clear the balance when you get home.  Worth considering.  Exchange rate for both currently  1.12.

Never change at a bank in U.K., they will charge you.  Always change in Spain, today the rate at Eurochange was £1.10.  If you have a 123 account with Santander you get free withdrawals from a 123 ATM in Spain and the exchange rate is even better.

In the U.K. you can  get a reasonable rate at Thomas Cook, book online and collect yourself.

You dont say if this is a one off visit or the first of many

If its a one off ... shop around for a good rate I’d say the rate on the high street here in Spain is nearer the bank to bank rate than it was in England, just my opinion, I exchanged money a lot in england and found the post office to be the best but still generally 3 or more ‘monies’ away from bank to bank rates, my own bank could not get near to the Post Office rates.

However if you are planning multiple visits it might be worth opening an account with a spanish bank and also with someone like Currencies Direct .... other suppliers exist 😁, their rates are generally within a cent ish of the bank to bank rates, whilst the high street is lower by 2.5 cents ish.

If you withdraw from an ATM don’t let the ATM provider do the conversion as their rate is dreadful, the machine will ask you, so just say no!

If you get Euros from a UK post office, always order online and select a post office to collect from,  if you you just walk in a post office to buy there and then the rate can be around 5 and 6 cents less per £1. M&S and Sainsburys had the around the same rate as Post Office. We live in Spain and the exchange shops here are usually the same as the best rate you can get in the UK.
