Hi we are just in the process of getting a holiday home, we have lodged a  deposit  plus other fees of 3.500 euros  with the Lawyer via our credit card thinking  extra protection, we have just had the bill in and they have charged us £85 I  thought you got charged if you had money out in cash as we are paying for a  service certainly  we didn't expect this,  as we pay off straight away we also opened a bank account before we came home via the Lawyer

Maybe we have got  stung this time, can any help how we can transfer  future money with the least possible charges please, I have read somewhere about transferring money in small amounts but have read that much stuff can't remember where I read it, there is so much to learn here any help or info appreciated thanks.

Sounds like unwittingly you used a credit card to make what was actually a cash payment, the worst of all possible scenarios.

Under normal circumstances we use for goods and pay off which isn't very often but using in Spain, we used the card in the Lawyers to pay  for  what we thought was  paying for a service and not getting cash to pay thought we would be ok and have some protection but looks like  lesson learned, just hoping for some advice not to fall into the hole  next time,

Winnie, we all have to learn, and even those that appear to know everything, had to learn.

Hi have read on various websites about TransferWise where you open account transfer money to them and they pay as your instructions with a good exchange rate. Take a look at them we only rent for holidays so get Nationwide to transfer money from my current account costs £9 per transaction up to £2000. Hope this helps

Transferwise is quick, safe and efficient.

You get the "market" rate which is generally the best available rate and far superior to what you will get UK bank to Spanish bank. The fees are very low.

Some people might say " ah but our currency exchange company doesn't charge fees" but what they don't realise is that the exchange rate is much lower and actually delivers less to your Spanish bank than paying a very small fee to Transferwise.

There is no lower limit to what you transfer and it's a very cost effective way of transferring money. If I simply had a holiday home here I wouldn't go to the post office for euros in cash before travelling, I'd transfer bank to bank using Transferwise then simply draw my daily cash from an ATM here in Spain.

Not sure on that one have to admit it was all done a bit quick as we were on our way home, and needed stuff in place a lesson learned sounds a bit naïve, but  a learning curve
