We purchased a safe from a company earlier this year, we are now being asked to provide our nie numbers for the guys accountants. Is this normal as it’s been nearly a year since the purchase.

Thanks

Hi Mary,

Yes, it's normal to provide your NIE to a supplier/service provider, especially where the goods and/or services exceed €1,000 in value.  We've been asked for ours when buying anything from a gate motor (€400), to a washing machine (€600), to a TV (€1,000), to a pellet burner (€2,100), to a car (€30k).  This is actually a good sign that you've bought from a legal company with enforceable guarantees - and that it's paying its taxes.

The other type of companies won't ask for your NIE - and they won't provide you with a written order or invoice either, LOL!

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you for getting back to me. The safe was only a couple of hundred euros so at least we can be sure they are a reputable company.

You will need an N.I.E, or more formally the Número de identidad de extranjero ("Foreigner Identity Number"), for many things that you buy in Spain.   Don't confuse it with the T.I.E., known as Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (Foreigner Identity Card),  is a personal unique number, given to every foreigner who intends to stay in Spain longer than six months, and which you are supposed to carry round with you when you live in Spain.

Not quite sure why you have replied. It is only the NIE that has been requested. We have held these since 2006 from when we lived in Tenerife. Just had never been asked to provide the details before when purchasing anything even new electrical items and furniture from reputable shops/companies .

I’m sure they were trying to me helpful. I’m not doubting that but the reply was not a direct answer to my question. Quoting TIE is not the answer to any question I asked. Thank you for your response.

NIE also stands for NOTHING IS EASY.  Which just about sums Spain up.

If you follow the rules and work the Spanish way things will fall into place. Things don't go easy if people are expecting officials to speak fluent English then wonder why they get turned away.....

Foreign people in the UK also find it difficult when wanting to correspond with official bodies.
