Agree!
I would respectfully suggest this situation needs neither an interpreter to ask the obvious at considerable expense, nor to present 'both barrels' etc., as you yourself suggest.
May I suggest you consider instead:
1. Take passport in as requested
2. Ask why you have been asked again
3. Seek assurance this will now suffice
4. Ask rep to write their name down and for them to make note on your file there and then of your conversation.
Spanish banks, in my experience over the last 7 years odd - albeit limited to Sabadell and the even more disobliging Bankinter - are experts only in being obstructive, officious and incompetent.
And all at a price.
Both outfits were 'charm personified' on day of sign-up. It ended there.
In short, it's fine until you need service, advice, assistance.
By single example, the newly appointed deputy manager at Bankinter (Los Dolces) told me a couple of years back that if I wanted customer service I should consider going to another bank because they don't have the time. She said it matter of fact ie not aggressively; we weren't in any confrontational situation.
No, I couldn't believe it either.
So.. best not to wind them up!
Good luck. All will more likely be sorted in your favour with a slower pulse.

Ps. Bugger! Isn't it irritating when you come across an 'All sorted now' post after spending time - too late - trying your best to assist and in this case, pour oil...!
Will leave it up. May help someone else who wants to variously do battle with the Spanish.. when we have already lost the war!
Cheers!
