Hi, we're just buying a holiday home in Villamartin. We'll be there for a few weeks at a time and wondered about getting a wifi connection in our villa. I've seen portable devices advertised online for around EUR7-10 per day (mifi, wifivox, etc). Has anyone used them? Are they any good?

As we'll only be using the villa occasionally we won't want to spend a fortune on a permanent internet connection - unless anyone knows of a cheap option?

bought a mifi from a business called dog and bone in La Zenia.  Cost 60 euro and was pay as you go. 1 gig 10 euro 2 gig 15 euro. useage lasts for one month good for general browsing and tourist type activity. had no problems with reception traveled all around costa brava. used for six months without problem.not reccomended if you watch vidios but good for normal use. they speak very good english there and will explain different options that suit your needs. the unit i  bought was orange. can top up anywhere they sell phone cards   hope this helps.

Hi, only just seen your question so it may be too late to be of any use. We have gone with TV horadada, they're inside Alcampo at La Zenia boulevard. The initial payment is 100 Euro for installation of a parabola dish and a router ,there is a possible additional charge is 20Euro if you need a pole and brackets for the dish, luckily we already had one spare. The installation charge has to be paid in cash to the fitter on the day.  Once installed you just pay at the office for the number of days you want the connection switched on. You can pay over the phone by card or in person but they require 24 hours notice for the switch on. The speed advertised is 6 meg which seems to be good for general use in our experience, we have about 4 devices connected plus a printer. Have used Spotify for music no problem but haven't tried to download a movie.

We did try a mi-fi with a Spanish data card but we found it a bit too slow and the signal wasn't great but that may be just up at Entregolf.

Hope this helps

That's really useful, and perfect timing (we're flying over today).

Thanks

Hi Mick

Probably way to late with this but we had the same problem. We will only be out around 3-4 times a year after buying a place in Villamartin. We also thought of the Broadband problem and grudged paying for internet when it was rarely used. We took out a mobile WIFI deal with 3 in the UK . It cost £15 per month with a 1 year rolling contract and can be used with the 3 "feel at home" package where you can use your phone and internet in Spain as you would in the UK for no extra cost (we phoned our son from Hong Kong and it cost not a bean for the 30 minute conversation). The mobile WIFI device is about a very small bar of soap and can go with you in the car so you always have internet (i.e. getting lost, google translate or checking prices against another retailer) and can be turned off when note in use, but can also be used in the UK when you do not have an internet signal. We duly signed up , connected it to our I Pad and I Phone and off we went. When we got to Spain and switched it on , surprise , surprise it did not work (fuming much !!). Phoned 3 and got put onto technical (at their cost) and they talked me through what had to be done. Result , perfect WIFI that I control , don't have to contact anybody to switch it on (just the press of the on button) and job done. Best of all , I can give it to the kids when they go and they always have mobile WIFI and NOT just in the house. Hope this helps.

Perfect timing Iain. I was just talking to a sales rep in Media Markt when i saw your response.  I'll look into that option.  Thanks.

Hi Bernie,

I'm afraid I didn't resolve it when I was last there. I looked into using a UK version but I think that'll be more expensive than getting a  Spanish PAYG version. I went to Mediamarkt in La Zenia boulevard and they had a few options but the assistant was trying to persuade me that I should sign up to a monthly contract; I will only be over there periodically but I may have given in and signed up to the contract but I didn't have my passport and NIE number with me which they needed. When I considered it I wasn't sure about the deal (it's hard to predict how much data I'll use when I am there). I think I will go with a Spanish PAYG sim card in a hub (there seem to be a few to choose from in Mediamarkt - they are up by the mobile phones).

If you do go ahead it would be interesting to hear how you get on (I won't be over again for a while so you'll probably be ahead of me).

Mick

My friend uses the dog and bone shop mentioned already for her phone with some internet, I believe she pays €15 euros which gives her calls home and Internet it runs out after 30 days but does her well, my problem is there's not a great signal for the mobile where we are ... I will let you know if we get something more useful
