Hi

Is it worth taking my old Sky + boxes  to Spain.  I believe they will work as freeview type boxes, but see sites that do Sky EU cards. Would this enable them to work with full range of programmes and record etc.

If a grey SD Sky digibox, or Sky+ digibox forget it.

They will already have lost access to the channels that are HD only, like BBC and some ITV channels. And in the next few months all channels on the UK TV satellites will be moving from DVBS to DVBS2 transmission technology...for which DVBS2 is only available on HD boxes.

So those using old grey SD sky boxes will basically lose all their channels in the next few months. (If you are a Sky pay customer, and still using a grey SD box, then you wll have the message on the screen to say "you will lose channels upgrade to hd")

If you have a Sky HD or Sky+HD, then without a card, they will get all the free UK TV channels (BBC ITV C4 Five, UKTV) etc , assuming your dish is large enough to receive the signals where you are. If you want more channels, or the ability to record on a Sky+HD box, then you need to pay the monthly subscription. If all you want is to record, then consider a Freesat recording box, or an "off the shelf" free to air box, that records onto a USB stick (downside of most of these receivers is not EPG)

I have Sky + HD boxes so it may be worthwhile taking them and see what I can do etc.

We bring our 2 sky boxes from Uk to Spain every visit(non residents) and get our subscription as normal, however we have lost various channels and as I recently had a problem with the LNB was advised more will be lost in the near future and way forward is internet tv. If you are coming to live permanent with internet set up (we dont have internet nor in Uk as its too expensive to be paying for 12 mnths in both houses for 6mnths use in either one.) I am aware of a reduced rate for certain wifi suppliers in Spain when not here but not in Uk. I only mention this as everyone tells us we will need internet in not too distant future so your sky boxes whilst usable here may not give you all the channels you want. We cant get ch4hd so watch on 804 but if ch4 switches off SD channel like BBC has then we will be stuffed. Our dish is 1.9mts so check what dish you will have too as size is important.

Re C4HD.

C4HD London is a very strong signal...if you can get 4seven, you will get C4HD London as it is on the same frequency.

But if you are allocated one of the other 5 C4HD regions, then these are tricky to receive, as they are on borrowed Sky frequencies at the higher end of the frequency range.

The thinking is that if / when C4 decide to close some of the SD channels, this frees up space on their own frequencies, so they can move these 5 HD regions onto thier own frequencies, which should be easier to receive.

If using a Sky box, it is possible to add C4HD region to your "other channels" list on your sky box...

As for "way forward is internet tv." i suppose it depends which way you go... vpn for the official apps and services, or is the way forward pirate IPTV services, which are being closed down at an increasing rate, with the risk that Spain follows Italy and starts to fine end users (Spain was hours away from blocking Telegram in Spain due to its use in piracy, but this was stopped with hours to go)

Thanks all

I would be happy to pay a subscription but I am I correct that you can’t get sky (legally) in Spain .  Sky are really missing out if this is true and it doesn’t make much sense really when most bars are able to show all English premier league games.

Well I will just have to go out to watch games ( such hardship🍺🍺🍺)

Sky cannot offer subscriptions in Spain, as they and the channels they carry do not hold the rights for their content for Spain. And although you can bring a Sky card from the UK, it is against the T&Cs of the sky contract to do so (but not illegal to do so).

If Sky UK were wanting to provide content in Spain, the Sky UK would have to buy all the rights for that content for Spain, putting them into competition with all the Spanish broadcasters. And I doubt that the number of subscribers Sky would get in Spain would make up the cost of purchasing those rights, so not worth it.

See their failed attempt a few years ago, when they set up a Sky Espana streaming service, but did not get the numbers with the limited content they could offer. BBC Also tried an international paid "iplayer", demanded by expats, but then take up was low, so they closed it down.

Most of the bars will probably be using pirate IPTV, as oppose to the subscribing to the official EPL broadcaster in Spain, Dazn and Movistar, which you can legally subscribe to and have many more live matches than Sky and TNT in the UK have.

Hi, I have a spare (black) sky box that I use in Spain and take my sky card over when I go but, you can’t record on it or use any facilities that require internet as it cannot be used abroad, we can get most channels, but we can’t get HD, which most are now switching to.

I know it's not a sky box, but have you thought about using an Amazon Fire Stick? You will need a VPN but you can get them very cheaply now and can down load loads of other channels. They also take less room then sky box. That is as long as you have the Internet. We pay €24.99 PM when it's on and €4.99 PM  when not in spain.  Just a thought.

Hi Carol

We actually take our Uk boxes over and get all subscription channels and record facility as in Uk. As you use a spare box with your card are you "pairing up" your card to spare box each time to get your subscription? This could be reason its not giving you the services. Obviously you have re- "pair it up" to Uk box after holiday. We too have a spare box in Spain but just for possible breakdown of a box.
