If anyone does want the ´real gold standard´- there are better services available as well as hardware that works in an integrated manner, much more like UK Sky and a world away in use from badly supported 3rd party apps & hacked Amazon sticks.
Firesticks - These are nothing but re-skinned basic Android sticks, re-purposed (hacked), and are bettered considerably using the right equipment in the first place. It is confusing, as so much information is out there.
It rarely gets mentioned that Amazon do not want 3rd party apps on their devices and has openly stated they will block or brick sticks with this if they have the opportunity.
I work for one of the genuinely longest established English language TV companies in Spain. Many systems offered have holes in them, whether be the service itself - stability, content coverage, on-demand, catchup, or overall integration with the performance and the hardware - such as timeshift & recording.
My job mainly is in customer service to test hardware, software, and performance of systems.
I find the Amazon firestick ´a bodge job´ - a cheap quick way of getting the job done, but it doesn´t have the correct software or optimized performance or features. It is sold to the blissfully unaware as the right tool for the job - which it is, BUT ONLY if you are using Amazon´s own ecosystem - outside of that for general IPTV services, IT IS POOR - it is like comparing a 3 wheel car to a Rolls Royce - a bigger difference in overall use, features and performance than most realise.
I've had to test no end of this equipment over the past 6 or so years since IPTV started to become popular.
Summary - anyone selling you a hacked Amazon Firestick, is not offering you the most suitable equipment. In fact, I would suggest any real TV company should not offer this equipment in this manner at all. OK for DIY on the cheap and home hobbyists. Substandard for many as the main system. I know this for a fact as switched many people off this hardware who have had issues with apps and various services.
Secondly, the price (usually) reflects service - simple mathematics. In order to have a cheaper service, you will either get less channels, on-demand content, support, and as is MORE THAN OFTEN the case, a less stable service. Sure you can live with compromise, but there is a HUGE variety in services and performance on offer.
If you offer a service at half the price, you need twice the people on the server halving the performance and stability. FACT. There is no free or cheap lunch, only compromise. Cheaper the service, the poorer - depends what you can live with and your expectations.
I roll my eyes every time I see the mention of a Firestick as when you see what is really available and how the job can get done, you soon realise the differences which are night and day.
I currently offer support for a few thousand customers and have been for a number of years - my opinions are based on my own product & service testing and client feedback over a number of years.
