is anyone currently using a VPN to access BBC iPlayer here please? I have previously tried free ones that do not work and a paid for Surfshark account that also wouldn't work on the tv as iPlayer must have detected it. Strangely enough it did work for downloading on my phone (using the same wifi), from BBC Sounds app (a recorded radio programme).

many thanks.

Is your VPN installed on the router or on a pc/tv/tablet?

I found when I had a UK phone number that I could access all the catch up services when using mobile data.

I use smartdnsproxy now, works great for me on all the catch up services, but not on netflix.

Hi Tony,

Try ExpressVPN, I have been really pleased with it and have just tested BBC iPlayer - works without issues.

After the install just change the settings to pick up London Docklands.

Best wishes,

Dave

I use Avast on my phone and am able to access BBC iplayer (usually at third attempt) when using 'UK Wonderland' option.

Silly name and don't know what it means but it is the option for 'optimum streaming' out of the various server location options.

BBC iplayer then seems to reject my attempt to access twice, typically but, on third attempt at hitting the 'Try again' tab on the BBC website, it let's you in.

A previous poster mentioned issues accessing Netflix. Don't understand this because Netflix has previously told me that account holders can gain access worldwide. I will call them now to check I still have this correct and, if not will amend here immediately.

UPDATE: Netflix advises that account holders can indeed access their account globally and the movies, documentaries etc., will usually be the same content as you would see as if from the country in which you registered. Having said that, I have found you at least get a single 'Most popular' or whatever they call it that relates to the country you are pretending to be in.

Netflix did not recommend use of a VPN in my call to them just now, in case it creates 'access issues.' That's their advise, not mine. I have never had issues while accessing Netflix, despite usually having my VPN set to New Zealand on my phone.

Accessing its content also works seamlessly on my Lenovo tablet when I am abroad and which does not have VPN software installed (I am a UK account holder.)

In brief: Your Netflix account should be accessible no matter where you are or -in my experience- whether or not you are using a VPN.

thanks le bee.

Netflix is not usually an issue until you try to use a vpn to change your usual location to access geo protected content. for example if you are a netflix UK account holder and use a vpn to alter your IP address to an american one it can refuse to connect (so you cannot access the US content).

it's never a problem using iPlayer on a phone using  a 4g connection but if you don't have an unimited data bundle you cannot watch many streams on it before you reach your limit (in my case 10gb).
