Apparently a new airport will be opened in Murcia on the same day the old one closes.

Which is 30 mins further away from Villamartin than SJ Airport. What this means is Alicante airport will be closer airport going forward
It certainly looks like it. We were looking for a house to buy in Murcia earlier this year but when we found out about the airport, we decided to buy in La Marina which is nearer Alicante.

That's one of the downsides to Villamartin is the lack of transport links from Alicante.
Doesn't directly impact us because I drive from the UK on longer breaks and on shorter breaks I hire a car. The price of car hire is ridiculously cheap. To hire a car for 7 days is cheaper than a taxi return transfer.
We never benefitted from San Javier as there wasn't enough flights going in which meant the flights were always a lot dearer than going into Alicante
Yes, car hire is very cheap but they make their money on the insurance. So you have to read all the details and check all the scratches on the car and make sure those are recorded before you pick it up and make sure it's in good nick when you return it, or you could loose your deposit. So we are planning on buying a car.

Only suckers buy the insurance from the hire companies. Annual policy purchased in the UK £38.
Turn down the extra insurance at the desk and leave a deposit ... Spend 10 mins going over the car making sure there is no damage or unrecorded damage.... Be careful where you park it when it's in your possession...If you do damage it claim it back via your insurance company in the UK.
Simples.
