If I can add my tuppence worth here!
I am a regular flyer to and from the UK to ALC. To me, these planes are like buses and (normally!) on average, I am on one every couple of weeks or so.
What you have to consider here is that you are not paying Emirates first-class prices for a RyanAir flight, you are getting a cheap flight. I look back to the days I was paying £300 return on a train from Manchester to London, which took 1hr40m and had just as many if not more passengers as a typical tourist plane at the time and then I compare that to my €50 flight and, well, that is why I compare them to buses.
Yes we know that all the airlines start with a basic price then if you want to book a seat, take a bag, be able to breathe in and out, upgrade to a qualified pilot etc (ok I am being sarcastic) - there is a charge, but these are all things you know all airlines do.
O'Leary was very clear with his attitude when he basically admitted that he can do what he wants and treat customers however he wants, because, as long as his prices are cheaper than the other airline's people will still book to fly with him! He is not wrong in his strategy! Morally, of course, any other company that openly treated their customer base like something they stood in would crash and burn (probably not a good use of words!)
As Les has pointed out, some of us are choosing this airline out of necessity. I now have daylight at the end of a very long tunnel and hope to return to Spain in the very near future, having now booked with Ryanair to return soon. It could be cancelled, I know that, as other airlines could, but one thing I can be assured of is that if there is half a chance someone will fly then you can bet your bottom dollar OLeary will take to the skies.
As for landing in a place 100km from where you thought, that is very simply a case of doing research. I appreciate what was meant with the comment, but that issue can be avoided.
In Summary, I have had OK and poor service from Jet2, EasyJet, RyanAir, Monarch and flyBMI (back in the day!) as well as Vueling and BA.
These are all cheap, no thrills airlines offering that exact cheap service, often at not so cheap prices, and all just with a different coloured wrapper on their planes. A much of a muchness.
At the end of the day, I will choose whatever airline best suits my budget, flight time and destination at the time of booking.
Hope it helps
