Just received a note of cancellation of our flight to Alicante from Ryanair on the 31st August.(Yes August).

Does anyone have a theory as to the reason for this very early cancellation. Could this be a way for Mr. O’Leary to charge more when we eventually rebook or am I being too cynical?

Have a look to see if there is another flight on the same day as airlines will not return to pre Covid levels for some considerable time so they are not offering so many flights now.

With normal schedules in total tatters there could be dozen reasons for a cancellation, O'Leary shenanigans being the least likely.

For starters only part of the fleet will be running by then and I'm still not sure that they've finally settled on occupancy levels either and if  that doesn't work out as they are hoping and planning for it's bound to have a major impact on the number of flight which actually operate.

TBH for for the foreseeable future then personally I would have very little confidence in any flight operating to schedule be it Ryan Air or any other carrier, and I wouldn't want to be on an aeroplane anyway.

Was it the Late flight? They are reducing flight service to 40% so instead of 3 flights a day they cut down to 2 etc... I know it's hard not to be cynical but if you wanna fly and are flexible,  look for earlier flight or a flight either side of your original date of travel

Thanks to you helpful people for your BFO (blinding flash of the obvious)

The answer is that there are no flights on that day, so managed to book a flight a day earlier.

Sorry for doubting you Mr O'Leary.

Movington, all good and relevant points, however your ending statement concerning not wanting to be on an aeroplane is debateable, as lots of people will have genuine reason to be eager to return to Spain for pressing personal ,or business reasons.

They wont have that choice !

Ryan air have launched a fantastic new upgrade scheme  that’s guaranteed to vastly improve your flight experience

For just a few pounds more, passengers can book the same route with another airline.......

Seriously, I would exhaust all Other avenues of transportation, including walking before I would contemplate using Ryan air again.

We flew to Barcelona with them years back ,only to find they landed in girona, approx 100km outside of Barcelona. It’s all in the brackets...

There is an instance where they actually land in the wrong country, I’m aware they do this because the airport fees are cheaper.

There was some debacle over having to book your seats (fees apply) if you didn’t

You could guarantee to be no where near your fellow travellers (family) on the plane.

Horrible company in almost every other way, with zero customer care.....I’d rather walk ..... lol

Ps. I’m an easyJet customer, a little bit more expensive but they recognise that I’m a human being.........

If I can add my tuppence worth here!

I am a regular flyer to and from the UK to ALC. To me, these planes are like buses and (normally!) on average, I am on one every couple of weeks or so.

What you have to consider here is that you are not paying Emirates first-class prices for a RyanAir flight, you are getting a cheap flight. I look back to the days I was paying £300 return on a train from Manchester to London, which took 1hr40m and had just as many if not more passengers as a typical tourist plane at the time and then I compare that to my €50 flight and, well, that is why I compare them to buses.

Yes we know that all the airlines start with a basic price then if you want to book a seat, take a bag, be able to breathe in and out, upgrade to a qualified pilot etc (ok I am being sarcastic) - there is a charge, but these are all things you know all airlines do.

O'Leary was very clear with his attitude when he basically admitted that he can do what he wants and treat customers however he wants, because, as long as his prices are cheaper than the other airline's people will still book to fly with him! He is not wrong in his strategy! Morally, of course, any other company that openly treated their customer base like something they stood in would crash and burn (probably not a good use of words!)

As Les has pointed out, some of us are choosing this airline out of necessity. I now have daylight at the end of a very long tunnel and hope to return to Spain in the very near future, having now booked with Ryanair to return soon. It could be cancelled, I know that, as other airlines could, but one thing I can be assured of is that if there is half a chance someone will fly then you can bet your bottom dollar OLeary will take to the skies.

As for landing in a place 100km from where you thought, that is very simply a case of doing research. I appreciate what was meant with the comment, but that issue can be avoided.

In Summary, I have had OK and poor service from Jet2, EasyJet, RyanAir, Monarch and flyBMI (back in the day!) as well as Vueling and BA.

These are all cheap, no thrills airlines offering that exact cheap service, often at not so cheap prices, and all just with a different coloured wrapper on their planes. A much of a muchness.

At the end of the day, I will choose whatever airline best suits my budget, flight time and destination at the time of booking.

Hope it helps
