i usually use COYS but i am being quoted €500 for hire (incl full insurance €0 excess) from 26th june till 11th july. collection and return to alicante airport.

i really don't want to risk a minimal insurance with another company but i see car hire offered for less than €100 for this period from firefly etc but then they want around €28 a day extra for full insurance.

can any of you wise peolple advise a way round this without leaving myself open to being ripped off when i return the car with supposed 'faults'? i have heard you can insure in the UK but have also heard car hire company's will not let you take a car without their own excess insurance.

any recommendations or advice gratefully received.

many thanks.

Go with Firefly, don't purchase the insurance.

Buy excess cover in the UK on line, mega cheap

When you pick up the car ignore the scare stories and put an excess on your CC usually 1000e refusing their insurance again

When you collect the car makes sure the damage on the car matches the paperwork

If you do damage the car they will put a charge on your card

Claim the charge back via the insurance

Don't fall for the car hire insurance scam

I agree with above. We use Questor and its about £42 per year. Never had any problem.

I also use Questor and the price has gone down each year as a loyalty bonus. I did have to claim once when Record Rentacar claimed the damage which was already recorded on the sheet was “worse” They took nearly €700 from my card which Questor paid back very quickly.

Needless to say, I have never used Record since. I always try to use Firefly now. They aren’t pushy when I tell them I have an annual policy and, touch wood, never had an issue with them.

Many thanks for info. Are firefly very pushy either their insurance because I've heard certain car hire firms have even refused to hire the car without their own insurance  being taken out?

Also is firefly desk in the terminal building or do you need a shuttle bus service?

Many thanks again for these replies.

Not pushy at all. They will mention it a couple of times but I’m just polite and say “no thank you, I’ve got an annual policy. Block the deposit on my card”. They may try one more but I just refuse politely. They certainty don’t insist.

It is in the terminal building. On your right as you walk away from the arrivals door.

Thanks shayden. I think I'm going to give this a try as €500 for a 2 week hire seems too much to me. I suppose I've got used to not queuing for my hire car but I presume this will not be the case at the firefly desk, but needs must!

You’re shoving near peak time Tony so it’ll be more expensive and car hire has gone up a lot this year. I use mainly either Centauro or Drivalia these days. I put your dates into Drivalia there now and the price that came up with full cover & no excess for a Mokka / Nissan Juke was €373 and a Citroen C1 just €335. Centauro have Panda for €333 and Micra for €337 again both with full cover and no excess. These do make Coy’s seem a bit expensive.

Couple things to remember opting to rent without excess cover is that the amount of the block they put on your credit card may depend on the size of car you rent and could be €1800 or more. That’s all fine if you’ve that much in your CC account which you can’t now access during rental period.  Also any damage policy you may take out abroad won’t be recognized by the rental companies here. If they say there’s any damage done either genuine or spurious you’ll have to pay now and recover that from your insurers afterwards. In that case be sure you get as much detail as you for them off the renters when you return the car.
