How do you prove you own a car in Spain,  do you get a log book (v5) like in the uk , Spanish equivalent? Say you buy a €10 000 car what would the transfer tax be on it , and road tax?

Ownership is proven by the "Permiso de Circulacion". Registration fee is les than 100,- and road tax is determined by every council. Furthermore there is a special transfer tax depending on age and make of the vehicle, not on shape. Never buy w/o an invoice (do not accept a contract).

The V5 equivalent as Killjoy says is a Permiso de Circulacion, when you buy a car and go to transfer it you will be given a temporary one while the original is being transferred, it  generally takes a few weeks for the original to come back.

It's difficult to say what the transfer tax would total, it's determined largely by a set government rate, as an example the last car I sold, sold for €7000 and it cost the buyer around €250 to have all the paperwork done at a gestoria, a month later I sold my van for €6000 and that cost the buyer around €300.

I have been told by several Spanish mechanics if you do the transfer across the border in Murcia it's cheaper, it doesn't matter where the car is registered. I don't know how true that is, but when buying whenever possible I pop into San Pedro del Pinatar for the transfer.

There is no need to go back and forth to different places, pop into a Gestoria and 15 minutes later it's all done.

If you buy from a dealer it's normally included in the sale price. If the car is more than 12 years old the cost of transfer is lower.

The cost of road tax here is much lower than in the UK, I have two cars a van and a motorbike and all four combined cost less than one car I had in the UK.
