Corvera and hiring car with possible insurance assess

Hi Guys

Heading out on Thursday to Corvera and will be hiring a car out of the airport, would like just to know in the short time it’s been open whether any fellow hirers have had the hard sell on the outrageous assess insurance?, in the 15 years I’ve been going to my house I’ve noticed the hard sell has got worse and in all those years I’ve never taken the assess ( but have bought the British annual assess at approx £39 )

However I’ve still had some desk staff give me grief that it is unacceptable I however have gone for the large card deposit BUT I have gone over the car with a fine tooth Combe to make sure in the scratches and marks it may already have, even calling them out to mark up the the paperwork if I think there is something more on the car, I make sure also that they see I do it on video and underneath to some extent, so they know I’m aware.... I do all this as I once seen a lovely elderly couple being absolutely wiped out by Goldcar for something they clearly didn’t do.... 15 years with no aggro or knocks ( but there can always be a first time I’m told) they are right but I don’t like getting ripped off ...... your thoughts on this guys and I will be extremely grateful and buy you all a beer if I ever meet you 🤣

Standard practice in Spanish airports Madrid is even worse.

The standard steps to protect yourself you appear to be doing

Own UK excess policy

Hands and knees inspection of the car with a torch

Refuse point blank to entertain their insurance

Most importantly be super careful where you park the car

Hi Kevin,

yes I'm sure everyone who's hired a car in Spain has had this problem. To be honest when you look at some of the prices charged it's pretty obvious that there's no way they can make any money on the hire charge. ( I have in the past hired a car for 2 weeks for 11 euros through Do-You Spain!) So They have to make their money by hiring out child seats, Satvnav and of course excess insurance etc at ridiculously high rates. I've done all of the photo and sign excercise, but have now got so fed up with them still trying to rip me off that I now book locally at a reasonable hire price and get no hassle whatsoever about using my own insurance. In facy the Company I use have even recommended where I can get this insurance if needed. Older cars but no bother and can relax when returning the car as I am confident I won't get ripped off.

Hi Kevin

I was once ripped off by Dickman’s. We had inspected and photographed everything - or so we thought! They claimed that we had damaged the upholstery on a back seat - there were two of us - we hadn’t even opened the rear doors! Lesson learned: inspect / photograph / video interior as well as exterior!

Anyhow, I’ve booked my car through flamenca cars for when I come over next week via corvera. The long queues and hard sell wears me down - you don’t get any of this with flamenca. Phew.

If you use Alicante airport then try the family run business Edirentacar.com

They do NOT charge extras - not extra insurance, no fuel charges, free child seats, fantastic service. The price they quote is the price you pay. Highly recommended - use them for many years several times a year and everyone I have recommended them to has been very happy with the service received.
