I applied for my residency in October 2020 but I did not get it until March 2021

I asked the Company who assisted in obtaining my Residency, how to go about changing my Licence and they have told me to wait as I missed the original date to register . They seem to think the law will change?

Does anyone have any factual information on this?

The only fact is that there is no facility to exchange a licence for anyone who did not register their intent in time.

There might be a facility in future and there might not, if so nobody knows when it might be.

You could, and should, have registered with DGT before Dec 31st.

Since you missed that deadline then your entitlement to drive on a UK licence expired 6 months after you  achieved residency but in any case on Oct 31st.

To continue driving you must now pass a Spanish test.

Exchanging licences is not a matter of law but of bilateral agreement, currently no such agreement exists nor does there appear to be any realistic prospect of one being reached in the near to medium term future.

The above means that you should not be driving in Spain. The consequences of driving without a valid licence can be severe, doubly so if you had an accident where potentially your insurance could be declared void.

The advice to wait is seriously remiss!

Hi slightly different question.  My daughter got her NLV visa so now has to consider changing her driving licence but before she came to Spain she obtained an international driving licence.  No one ever mentions this.  How long can you use this with it being obtained in Britain

Anyone know anything or where information can be found.

There is no such thing as an 'International Driving Licence'.

What there is is an International Driving Permit which despite the name is nothing more than a translation of your licence and is only valid when presented with it.

What it is NOT is a driving licence of any sort so no, the holding of one will in no way alter the need for your daughter to take a Spanish test within 6 months of arrival in Spain.

And btw the subject of the IDP  routinely appears here so it's not correct to say that nobody ever talks about it.

Well, there is no need to be so mean about it.  Sorry I did not know that IDP is the same thing.  May I remind you that this forum is to help each other not to be rude.  There is a difference with being polite and stating something without being insulting.

Perhaps if that is your attitude you should refrain from commenting.

How was that mean?

I simply stated the facts, sorry if it was not dressed up prettily for you.

I couldn't see anything "mean" in the reply, just a straightforward, clear reply correcting any misunderstanding. Neither could I see any insult.

Surely this  helpful, rather than allowing someone to labour under their misconception.
