Hi Guys

Coming out in Mid September and seen on ‘ youdospain.’ That the first selections that come up are all Goldcar and looking at their customers comments I’m thinking better of it

Don’t get me wrong I’ve used them before and put my foot down in regards to the hard sell insurance and done all the videoing etc but I thought I’d have a look about ( as I’m sure we all do) and found Economy car rentals, have any of you good people had any dealings with them or is it the same old story in regards to the hard sell? Or have you heard anything by ear

Regards All

Neither DYKS nor Enconomy are car hire firms just 3rd party agencies same as so many others like them who search the internet. They'll have no input with the car hire firms especially at the desk when you arrive.

There are many individual car hire firms operating at Alicante with smaller ones like, Edi, Coy's, Lara etc and others where you are dealing direct with the hirer & the full price quoted is what is charged without any surprises later.

I've had well over a dozen hires over the last 18 months since buying my property and have learned a few things.

The absolutely cheapest 3 or 4 companies are not working with a viable business plan and the only way they can make money is to try and fleece you for damage that you haven't done.

The absolute baseline, imo, is Goldcar, who despite the reviews are one of the few companies that haven't tried to rob me in 4 hires with them.

My extremely strong advice is to get an excess insurance policy at home. They cost about £40 a year, from memory.

Even so, you'll need to take dozens of pictures and maybe a video, showing the condition of the car, on pick up.

And even then, don't expect to be allowed to walk away without being charged hundreds, until you get chance to trawl through all the pictures and claim a refund either.

If it's a one-off hire, you might just be better paying the extortionate charges for the hire company's premium insurance or go with COYS or LARA, as suggested, which is basically just the same thing anyway.

Then, you won't have the slightest issue.

Depends if you're willing to pay more than what the hire costs, for that extra insurance, as compared to a big saving, but maybe a load of hassle.

I always went the cheapest option, often causing me grief and this is exactly why I've bought an old banger which I park at the airport.

Sadly it seems to be any Spanish hire company's way of working now.

Fwiw, about the only company I might recommend is Wiber. I've hired from them a couple of times and found them excellent.

But then I'd recommend Goldcar too, but I'm definitely in a massive minority on this site. You can only say what you see, can't you? :-)

We’ve been using Drivalia for years now. Find them very good and never any hassle. There’s a is shuttle bus from the airport to their office and back again when you’re returning home. We always take the ultimate package and it covers everything . I would advise to book early so to avoid disappointment selecting a car of your choice. There is an extra charge if it happens you are returning the car after 10pm and before 8am. We have tried other companies but find these the best.

Whereas I had the most grief from any company with this outfit.

It just goes to show, they're all much of a muchness.

I honestly wouldn't bank on any of them giving you a hassle free hire if you don't pay for the extortionate Premium insurance.

And that's why I won't be using any of them anymore.

That’s just our experience and we are happy with them. I do understand that not everyone is happy with all companies.
