Hi all

Driving over from the UK end of august with our dog. Last time we did this was the summer of 2019 and all was fine but since then Brexit and covid rules have kicked in.

Do we need anything other than our full covid passes to drive thru France and enter Spain? I presume no locator forms are now needed?

Also when arriving at Folkestone for Le Shuttle train, what is the procedure with our dog? Do we have to go to a separate area or board the train with everyone else. In 2019 I can't recall any specific checks being made on our dog but I suspect that may have changed now?

As my wife won't drive abroad I'm going to have 2 stop overs (did it with one last time but first days drive from Essex was 740 miles which I found too much). Stopping overnight in Nantes and then Zaragoza. Was going to stick to motorways and suck up the toll charges but does anyone know, on that kind of route, how much longer in time it would take to avoid the tolls?

Many thanks for any advice.

I do a similar route once or twice a year, back and fore to Caen, which is my preferred ferry crossing point.

In my view, trying to dodge tolls in France is not worth it, the non motorway routes are too convoluted. Bite the bullet and stay on the motorway.

However, when I hit Spain, I come off at the first junction immediately after the border and head into the mountains on the N121A, direction Pamplona. Not as fast as motorway travelling but a good road and very scenic. When you get to Pamplona, go round the city free on the ring motorway, then come off onto the N121 south, which is well signed. Just outside Tudela you turn onto the A68 east, direction Zaragoza. From Zaragoza, the toll free A23 motorway takes you to the AP7 at Valencia and all points south. Not one cent spent on tolls in Spain, albeit maybe an hour or two extra in driving time on quiet roads. Good luck!

Many thanks for your detailed answer. I take it you don't bring a dog with you?

No, sorry mate, can't give you any advice on carrying dogs.

Another tip - fuel is cheaper in Spain if you can eke out what's in your tank in France until you cross the border. If you follow my route, when you come off the motorway at the first junction in Spain and head for the N121A, there are three or four fuel stations all bunched together on the left hand side, because it's a big truckers junction. I always fill up at the last one, its the cheapest, Gasolinera Bidasol.

We use the Eurotunnel a few times each year and we've always seen travellers with dogs queueing with everyone else, so no separate boarding area. I think there are passport requirements for dogs since Brexit and hopefully someone can advise you on what those are.

No locator forms or Covid certs required now.

Agree with Herefordjack on the journey through France, although I would rather pay the tolls in Spain as well, around 20€ depending which way you go, rather than spend another hour or two on the road. It's a long enough drive as it is and what you save in tolls you may spend in extra fuel. avoiding them.

I agree about the tolls. I really want to shorten the drive as much as possible.

When you arrive at the booths at Eurotunnel in Folkestone, you won’t be issued with a hanging letter, you’ll be given a card that you have to give to the Pet check in desk, once they’ve checked the pet passports, and AHC in your case you’ll be given the letter hanger.

The pet check in centre is well signposted it’s beside the entrance to the main terminal.

Hope this helps

Also do I need anything special for my car on the trip over. My number plates bear the UK flag and letters and I have hi-vis jackets and a red triangle?
