It all depends on whether or not you have a "Certificate of Conformity" for you vehicle. If not better forget it. Then, front and rear lights need to be replaced with optical units suitable for RHD road conditions. A gestoria will charge 300,-+ for doing the paperwork. Administrative fees will be witin reasonble limits (+/-250,-) if you bring the vehicle within 6 months after setting up residence. Please PN me if you need further details.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, we have just bought a holiday home in spain and prefer a r/h car have been offered my brother in laws 10 year old astra 1.6 at a very good price ( its only got 44000 genuine miles on the clock) so was wondering if it was worth it to take that over and have it registered there ( what is a certificate of comformity) but if its too much hassle might buy 1 over there its just that this has been serviced and looked after from new so I know its history

You should be able to "import" it to Spain for well below 1000 Euros.
It is an Astra - a European standard model.
Headlights are cheap ebay (second hand or new pattern parts).
Rear lights clusters probably not needed - if it has a reversing light on each side, the LH side can be rewired with a red-coated bulb to provide the foglight.
The import tax is based on age, CO2 and the Spanish official (Cadastral) value. The car is old .... so low tax.
Even if you don't have the certificate of conformity (COC) go-to Vauxhalls website and you can search for COC though the email address you need to mail is [email protected] you need to attach the V5 document and request the COC - my certificate was mailed to me after about 4 weeks free of charge but just a few days after my car went through the matriculation process! As it took too long to get here I had to pay about an extra Eur 100 for the car to be checked for conformity. All in all I paid an agent Eur 1500 or so including new headlamps to be fitted which were new supplied and fitted. They re sited the reverse and rear fog lamp included in this price.
I also have an old BMW which I've had for 16 years and this is also being done on Monday next week for around Eur 1200 though the lights are xenons so don't need changing.

FWIW, I imported 2 cars.
Neither had COCs.
Neither was registered new in Europe.
One was a North American model, never sold in Europe.
