Where to purchase a car
Just moved to Villamartin and need to buy a car. Wouldn't know where to start. We want a car on Spanish plates not British plates. Don't want to pay excessive money. Would anyone have any idea where to start looking.
Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunately they are all going to be big money compared to the UK!
Be careful whatever you buy as well because you have to pay transfer tax for the vehicle and depending on how much the purchase price is it can run into 1000s on top of it! Even a lot older second hand cars 20 years old get tagged with it!
Try and do as much homework as you can I would suggest and even buying private like you may in the Uk can still leave you with a nasty taste in your mouth because the traffico people have a sliding scale of charges/ taxes that you still have to pay! Besides your yearly tax you pay at the town hall for it!
Parts tend to be a lot dearer in spain as well if you brought an older car which needed more maintenance....hence the number of car breakers still here compared to UK!
I have spent years trying different options and have finished up with a three year old car with plenty of Warrenty left on it and it suits our needs.
Good luck with your search .

We recently decided to buy a small second hand car . Firstly as the shock of the pricing compared to UK - much more expensive in comparison. We innocently sallied for the thinking we would be able to buy something perfectly adequate for around 3K sterling. Not a chance - at that price they were all very old and high mileage. We were given to understand that due to the lack of a ‘fleet’ market here, and the fact that most Spaniards seem to keep their vehicles forever, until they are run into the ground, there is not the same kind of thriving market for this kind of vehicle here. We ended up spending 6K euros for a six year old small Hyundai from the local KIA dealership. They took care of all the transfer paperwork etc which was included in the price - around 350eu which seems to be standard for this size car. to be fair, they were e xtremely helpful, the car was handed over very clean with all the small dents etc fixed. They serviced it thoroughly - included - and the MOT equivalent is valid until the end of next year. Insurance was nearly the same as our existing bigger car (we live miles sout in the campo, so the second car is really a back-up) at somewhere under 400 eu which was a surprise, but we were advised by our insurance agent that the cheaper insurance with higher excess was not really worthwhile. Would be dubious about buying privately due to no comeback with problems which may occur and the difficulties of sorting transfer tax.
