Hi there, I have read newspaper articles and various websites on this topic but I am still not sure I understand it.  I know that as a second home owner but not a resident I can only stay for 90 days out of 180.   So for example, if I make my first visit on 1 February and have two holidays of 45 days each, returning to UK by 1 August, can I then start my second 180 days on 1 September and have another 45 day stay?

If this is not the case could someone give me the alternative please.

The rule is 90 days in any rolling 180.

So, for example, 3 months in EU/3 months in UK on a rolling basis.

(Or 1 month in/1 month out.)

You can't add 2 chunks of 3 months together to make 6 months.

Hello

If you arrive in Spain on Feb 1st you would have to leave on April 30... that is 89days...that way you wont exceed your 90days. Then wait another 90 days in UK before you can come back

Cheers

It is 90 days in total in any consecutive 180 days, and that is the total permitted in the whole of Schengen, so if you drive down through France then those days count as well.

You can download an app to your phone called a Schengen calculator which you may find useful.

Hi there’s plenty of Schengen calculators available this first one is a simple one,the other one is a good one but I recommend you read the pdf. with the instructions

https://schengenareacalculator.com/

https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/content/visa-calculator_en

As others have said if you do your 90 days in one block then go home for 90 days then return for 90 days it’s a simple calculation. It gets tricky if you want to spread your days out in shorter visits, hence the calculators to check you don’t overstay.

Just seen Davbev1 post I’d forgot that you can put an app on your phone 😊

Thanks Kelvin/ElinSpain/Davebev/Anne for helpful replies.   I think I get it. It's the term rolling 180 that fooled me.

The calculator  is very useful and I have managed to shoehorn in two visits between late May and early October which seem to be acceptable and suit me.
