We are new holders of TIE cards.

When we arrive at Alicante Airport do we still follow the non EU Passport holders or use the other gate which has a smaller queue.

Thanks

Non EU line, I'm afraid. The EU line is for holders of EU passports only as a citizen of the EU and not just a resident.

Make sure you show your passport and TIE so they don't stamp your passport. If they do then it is just a souvenir.

Your TIE only certifies that you are a resident in Spain, but does not provide you with citizenship. Thus, the reason you will have to use the non-EU line.

I've wondered about this for a while now and then came across this website

https://www.forbes.com/sites/timlai/2023/01/04/when-can-uk-citizens-use-eu-passport-lanes/

  • Non-EU Family members of EU citizens, including Withdrawal Agreement family members
  • If you are a UK citizen who holds a residence card as a "Family Member of A Union Citizen" then you are entitled to use the EU passport lanes as by its very definition you are treated as a beneficiary of the Free Movement Directive. (Ref. Article 3 of Directive 2004/38/EC and Article 2, Paragraph 5(a) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399)

Unless I'm mistaken it seems that UK citizens who hold residency cards (TIE) can use the EU lanes, but it all seems a bit ambiguous to me and I'm not sure I'd attempt it the next time I travel through the airport as most of the time the border control people still want to stamp my passport.

That's been my experience at least, but then its been a couple of years since I've been through Alicante Airport, perhaps things have changed in more recent times.

Regards

Gary
