For God sake, give it a rest about people being illegal. It's just getting repetitive and boring. No one is interested!

Well thanks for the replies, to say the British don't pay into the Spanish economy is very wrong , so far since I brought my apartment I've paid several thousand in taxes to buy , mortgage, water electric life insurance buildings insurance community fees, we eat in local restaurants, we drink in local pubs , hire Spanish cars , then once we have licence we have to do the mine field of Spanish taxs and then registering with the Spanish police , I'm sure these will be easy to, lol.

I think there are many British citizens both permanent and non resident who comply with every requirement as far as possible.
I'm sure they are the majority. And the majority do contribute greatly to the economy. Even the illegals (emotive word I know) contribute just by living here and using water, electricity, going to a bar or restaurant and shopping.
However, I can definitely say that many Spanish people look at elements of the British community with some degree of negativity. Partly because of the things that Ray has said, for example their refusal to learn the language, their refusal to integrate with the wider Spanish community - oddly, the very same things we criticise immigrants to the UK for!
I have contact with a British person, long term Spanish resident who has been active in politics here, who has been a councillor here, a fluent Spanish speaker and conversant with the Spanish "system". Among other things she helps British people on the Costa Blanca as a translator for Residencia etc and she has first hand evidence that in the Costa Blanca South, and Benidorm in particular in the town halls and extranjero offices there is a growing impatience, verging on dislike and disdain for British immigrants who have been under the radar for so long but now suddenly, because it's in their interests to do so, want to become legal all of a sudden.
It would not surprise me one bit if the delay on holiday let licence applications is slow by design.
Please don't be offended by my post, if the cap doesn't fit, don't wear it! Well done you ! But it does seem that the minority have been noticed.
Steve

RayD,
As I said in an earlier post. If you have evidence then go to The relevant Authorities and report it, if that is something that bothers you so, but if you are just repeating unprooven hearsay then this forum is not the place for it and it's certainly not the place for unfounded random Brit bashing.

Hi Steve
Good point but I as a 16 year property owner here who is 61 years old find as an” oldie “ that I find it nearly impossible to learn the language no matter how much I’ve put my head to it and I’m not thick ( I think 🤣)
I do however try to converse with the odd greeting and ordering of food ..... however when I do try I find quite often I’m met with immediate impatience.... I’m not being petty ( believe me) but I feel that puts a lot of people off learning

That's a very good point Kevin. As an oldie myself I can agree, it's not sinking in like it used to!
But don't let it put you off, keep at it. Have you tried a phone app like Duolingo? Not perfect but it will get you speaking daily. You set your own usage target and its free.
One other thing I noticed when I moved over first and my Spanish was very poor is this: if you go into a shop and ask if they speak English quite often they'll say no. Walk into the same shop and say lo siento por mi Espanol, quite often they will ask you in English what you want!
It's not easy but well done to those who get out of their comfort zone and try.

Kevin, I'm 60 and like you, I was having trouble, but I found a great way to learn...
Down load on to your phone, computer, I pad.. duo lingo.... it's so easy, they have it sorted for people like us... go for 5 mins to start, I bet you a pint, it works for you too. Good luck.

Thank you so much I’ll give it a go xx
Strange how a Thread can wander from it's original purpose. This one starting off discussing Holiday Let's, then derailed by RayD upsetting members by Bashing the Brits ,then cunningly being moved on to thoughts on Spanish Lessons😀
