You just need to shop around a bit.

Some outlets, especially those other than Repsol or Cepsa, will change one type of bottle for the other. I didn't have a problem in swapping at an individual petrol station.

From a google search:

In Spain, you can exchange an empty gas bottle for a full one at a ferretería (hardware store), but generally you cannot swap a butane bottle for a propane bottle of a different type or size using the same contract/deposit. The exchange must typically be for another bottle within the same gas type and size category (e.g., empty 12.5kg butane for full 12.5kg butane).

Key Considerations for Gas Bottle Exchange

  • Different Exchange Groups: Butane and propane bottles are considered different products and often belong to different exchange groups or product lines by suppliers like Repsol and Cepsa.
  • Different Connectors and Regulators: Propane cylinders operate at considerably greater pressure than butane cylinders, and as a result, their regulators and cylinder connections are different and not interchangeable for safety reasons.
  • Spanish System: Spain uses an exchange system rather than a refill system at standard outlets. You bring an empty bottle and exchange it for a full one, paying only for the gas content (after the initial bottle deposit).
  • Contract Requirement: To get a full-sized Spanish gas bottle initially (e.g., 12.5 kg), you usually need to set up a contract (póliza) with a major supplier like Repsol or Cepsa at a petrol station or a distributor, which requires showing ID (NIE or passport) and sometimes proof of address. Once you have a contract and an empty bottle, exchanges are straightforward.
  • Ferreterías: Many ferreterías do stock and exchange gas bottles, particularly the widely used Repsol (orange) and Cepsa (silver/grey) varieties. However, the same exchange rules apply regarding gas type and size.
  • Adapters: If you are using an appliance designed for one type of gas (e.g., butane) and want to switch to the other (propane), you will need the appropriate regulator and possibly new tubing for safety.

In practice, if you want to switch from using butane to propane, you would likely need to acquire a proper empty propane bottle (perhaps second-hand or via a new contract) and the corresponding regulator and then use that specific bottle for future exchanges. You can check the specific policies of major suppliers on their websites, such as the Cepsa website or the Repsol website.

Whichever way you decide, you aught to get a gas service engineer to install and test the new setup.

Ask an interpreter to help you, it will probably cost you €20 for an hour but things will move forward for you quickly.

I think your nearest Repsol agency (not petrol station) is at Calle Gabriel Miro, 6, Torrevieja.
