just done this journey for the first time at the end of august and returning 2nd week of october - (essex to villamartin).

1 driver, me, 1 passenger, 1 dog.

left home at around 4am to get le shuttle from folkestone. caught the 6.20am one. then with only 3 stops for loo, coffee and dog break arrived at our overnight stay in bayonne southern france at around 7pm and 740 miles later. bit too long that was and next time will add another night stay i think.

left bayonne around 8.45 the next morning and arrived in villamartin around 6pm, no issues and easy drives. stuck entirely to motorways and the tolls in total for the return journey was around €175. all driving (apart from 1st leg to folkestone was done in daylight, which really helps).

next time i am going to drive from home to nantes. stay overnight, then drive to pamplona, stay overnight and then down to villamartin. so around 400 odd miles a day. if my wife could help with the drive then 1 overnight is not an issue but as the only driver i found 700+ miles a bit too far in a day. the second day down to our house was around 580 miles, so much more doable.

Hi Yvonne took ferry from Portsmouth Friday 12pm arrived Santander this Sunday 1pm Spanish time great crossing. Drove to Hotel Alisa at Lerma south of Burgos a couple of hours for the night then down A1 towards Madrid ring road to Albacete then down towards Murcia arrived Villamartin 6 hours later only tolls of 4.40 euros at end on AP7. Shame about the weather!

I have made the journey down to Costa Blanca literally dozens of times in cars, vans and motorcycles and have always found the ferry to Calais the cheapest option even taking fuel, tolls etc into account. Also after the long ferry crossing you still have about an 8 hr drive ahead incurring costs

I drove to Folkestone caught the 6.20am train and from Calais drive down the west of France on the ,A10 I believe. Took motorway all the way down to Bayonne Tarnos where we stayed overnight (780 miles) arrived around 7pm.

Next morning left about 8.30am crossed border drove thru Zarrogoza down to Valencia arriving in Villamartin around 6pm (570 miles).

Again motorway all the way. Tolls worked out to €175ish return. Probably could have got there a bit quicker but needed to let our dog have toilet breaks every 2-3 hours plus my wife doesn't drive so didn't want to push myself too hard and get tired.
