Hi, I am thinking of driving through France to Villamartin from the UK, rather than flying as we usually do. We would like to treat it as a leisurely mini holiday, stopping off at various places along the way. Has anyone done this and what advice could you offer regarding ferries, nice places in France to stay at etc.

Regards Tony

Tony, I try to do it once a year now.  I love it.  I keep away from the toll roads as they are boring.  Just get a map out.  I have done a few routes and all have been a pleasure.  Cost circa £600 return ... excluding hotels and food.  But its brilliant.  Thats with £170 flexible ferry fare so could do cheaper I suppose.

Been to some amazing French towns en route and Spanish...  Done hotess with car and motorbike and campervan.  Prefer campervan as have fridge etc, also bikes for exploring.  Some of the municipal sites in france 5 - 15 euro are amazing...

I would say just do it.

We go via the Chunnel. Have two stop overs in France at B&B's. (Like Premier Inns in this country). Usually drive from Perpignan to Vilamartin in a oner!

Having started this thread I am most grateful to all who have offered advice. One thing which concerns me a little is driving right hand drive vehicle over there. Any comments on this would be great.
