The news today has been awful to watch, events in Glasgow, Intu in administration, the little boy who was thrown off the Tate Modern, UK deaths due to Coronavirus 186, police taking selfies with the bodies of the 2 ladies murdered in London.

I am starting to feel society is breaking down it's like an apocalyptic film.

Only now!

Where have you been, in hospital in a coma?

The entire year has been a disaster, but most of the societal issues have been coming due to the divisive nature of the Brexit campaign.  I can't see how it can be repaired.  As for the virus, it will pass and life will go on - indeed Scotland and Ireland have reported 0 deaths on many occasions the past few weeks. England still has much to do in that respect.

But with regards to Britain... It is done I'm afraid. Whatever was in the past that folk hark back  to is never returning.

I hardly know how to answer this without being accused of being anti-brit, but you're doing it for me.

However, how about a bit of lighter news from the US. Trump has suggested they have been doing too much testing as it shows the contagion figures going up. "Maybe we shouldn't be doing so much testing" says Trump, whilst on the election trail.

New York has shut its borders to several other states and 16 states have increased contagion figures.

The scientists in the US say that testing shows instead of 2 million contagions, it's more likely to be 20 million.

But, Trump says, "I have beaten it".

Prat.

Just to add to the grim news, more riots in Brixton and notting hill , attacking police with knives, smashing their cars up and chasing them down the road ! illegal raves on a almost nightly occurrence attended by thousands of people , and no doubt more protests this weekend attended by thousands no doubt ignoring social distancing as the norm. All in all it's pretty awful !

Let's just hope the Spanish weekenders set a good example on their first weekend of freedom, and not a bad one!

There are thousands of them heading to the coast.

They might be heading to the coast but I for one will be having my own form of shielding to avoid the idiots as we have gone through the lock down and don't want to take risks now.

The Guarda Civil would not tolerate the anti social behaviour seen in Britain nowadays. Sadly, the police aren’t allowed to say boo.   It’s the same in N.I sadly. The police don’t appear to  have any authority to deal with thugs the way they deserve.  The law seems to be on the side of the villains in today’s world. I don’t know when this happened but all we ever hear is THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS interfering.  Law and order is absolutely vital and in today’s world, decent people aren’t safe from crime. Years ago, if you called 999 in an emergency, the police would have been at your door in minutes....not so nowadays.  There is no respect for anyone.  Even school teachers are walked over by children and their parents.  How life has changed, years ago if a teacher told our parents that we had been troublesome or not hadn’t been doing our homework, our parents would have supported the teacher and rightly so.  In today’s world, school teachers are verbally and physically abused by students and many times, parents see nothing wrong in this behaviour. So....where does that leave us in society today?  If parents are incapable of teaching their children right from wrong and the schools aren’t allowed to guide them, there is no hope.  Society is fast declining and because we oldies all have standards we cannot understand what is happening to our world.

Parents don’t chastise their children, schools aren’t allowed to, the police daren’t  touch them and the behaviour we have all seen on tv recently is the result.  No point in us being so shocked, it has been going on for years and we have stood by and watched it.

In a Spain, every Christmas in most large towns, you will find a wonderful nativity scene close to the church.  You will never see security guards or police standing guard over them. There is no need.  Nobody in Spain is going to cause it any damage, they respect their Christian background and even though many young Spaniards no longer attend church, their respect is bred into them.

This could Never happen in the UK,  it would be destroyed before the first night was over unless it was securely under lock and key with an alarm system attached!

It’s time to teach young children to respect their elders.  It’s as simple as that.  We owe it to our youngsters to encourage them to learn right from wrong.

If we don’t speak up and demand change ,  everything will continue to go into a decline and our country will get worse and worse.   God help us all.

I fully echo the statement by Grannyrose. However the  majority of us do install morals into our children. Unfortunately I won't go into my full thoughts on the subject as I will be chastised on here and its a particularly awkward subject.

The main point is correct in such that people in authority are scared to act due to repercussions whether racially, physically or verbally.

I would love to be a policeman for a day........oh the fun of it!

I think a lot of the problem George, particularly recently, is the lack of legislation and Johnson's insistence that policing be 'by consent'. Which basically means that, if you don't agree with it, you don't obey it.

Legislation has also been removed from social distancing measures in the UK and they are now 'guidance' only. This means that the police and councils aren't able to stop the crowds as they aren't breaking any laws, just guidance.

I prefer the Spanish model which is policing by 'respect'. Grannyrose's mention of the Beléns which are in town plazas every Christmas is a good example.

However, her criticism of the European Court of Human Rights is unfair as Spain and the rest of the EU are subject to it, whereas the UK isn't. So, it can only be good if countries which come under it are better behaved than one that isn't.
