Hi there,

I am trying to improve my Spanish and I was wondering if anyone had any favorite bars or restaurants where the waiters either don't speak English or where they are keen to help you with the local language. I find that in a lot of the shops/ bars/ restaurants when I try my poor Spanish they respond in perfect English!

Yes I can understand your desire to improve your Spanish by chatting with waiters etc ,that's OK but not if they are busy of course.

The best way that I've found is to try to get together with Spanish locals who are trying to learn or improve their English, purely conversation two way language which is a great relaxed way to learn.!

Try advertising for interested local people and mention in bars etc., I'm sure that you will get some response.

I run free classes for Spanish people, just basic English and general conversation and it has helped to improve my Spanish and keeps me up with all of the local gossip.

At the moment I'm running a class for usually about 15 Spanish pensioners, it's total chaos but fun and they are eager to learn ! ( average age 72 ).

I also have different groups, infants and people from all walks of life including bank officials ,town hall workers and shop assistants and cleaners, they all mix well and we have a good laugh.

I'm in a very rural large village in Granada Province, so not easy with the dialect...!

Good Luck with your efforts.

Regards,

           Gordon

Thanks Gordon - my issue is that I cannot yet move to Spain since my wife is still working full time but I am out probably 5 ot 6 times per year. I do Spanish at home and when i go to the Torrevieja area everyone speaks English well.

I see..However even in Torrevieja there are always Spanish people wanting to improve or learn English and you could arrange for 'students' to meet up with you when you are visiting and correspond with them by e-mail, I do this with several nurses who are now working in different areas.

You will also find it very useful if you make friends with locals they will help you with all sorts of issues.!

I spent about 17 years in the Alicante / Valencia areas and didn't have much time for lessons whilst I was working, but wish that I'd made more effort .!

Regards,

I really like Restaurante Doña Isabel in San Miguel. Really good food and always answer and address you in Spanish unless you’re struggling. Great Menu del Dia too.
