Steve, I was relaying what I was told by the builder. Is he right or are you? Are you a builder? I don't know the answer but the builder is still a friend of mine and has built many premium houses on the Northern Costa Blanca.

Well sorry but it is a drainage cover from plumber.

And isn't that for draining away water? I always thought that was what a drainage device was for.

When we had our new bathroom installed , the guys naturally took the “ mancover” off. It was a pipe junction and a lot of “gunk” got pulled out . Not sure why ours is where it is as it’s an odd spot…in front of the loo and bidet and away from the sink and shower !

We have just bought a new property and I asked what these were and I was told they were for access if anyone needed to get to the drainage system

It is an inspection cover ,nothing more ,nothing less.If a plumber tells you anything else he is an " expat easyJet plumber",sorry but that is how it is.Have installed many, many, waste systems in Spain ,it is what it is .Drainage system for flooding had a good laugh at that!!

Every bathroom in Spain has this ,Inspection cover, flats ,houses, mansions ,haciendas,no big deal it is normal !

I don't know what they are for. I was only reiterating what I was told. However it seems to me that everyone has their own take on what they are used for.

At the end of the day does it really matter? I'm sure that if needed a plumber will know what he's doing. It's best to leave the job to the men who know.

As SteveyJoanna has rightly said, it's an inspection cover. One of the many handy and practical design features you find in Spanish buildings together with electricity access points for each room. In the UK you open the base of a ceiling lamp in a 1940s house and you are faced with eight wires....do the same in Spain and you see two. DIY heaven.

Thank you for your valuable advice, it's good to know. Would you advice to open the cover once in a while, let's say once a year to disinfect it and pour some bleach down the pipe as a form of good maintenance? TIA

It is an inspection cover in case the pipes get blocked ,when replacing it ensure you seal it well as otherwise the area will smell due to escaping methane from the pipes

Since I had my bathroom changed a year or so ago we have been plagued with methane like smells in our bathroom (no laughing at the back!).

We had one of these in place and now have another following the refurb. Should I seal this one then and it may help?
