Hi

I have had a read through past posts but some seem for a few years ago so just wanted some updated advice.

We are looking to move permanently next year with our 16yo boy and 12yo girl, we had originally looked at the villamartin area but now not sure - the kids will be going to one of the private schools in the area (haven’t decided which one yet) and we would like to be somewhere where they can get around on bike / foot etc to friends. Which areas would you suggest to look?

Ill be coming out in Sept and we are all coming at Christmastime so will be able to get more of a fell for the area

Thanks in advance!

Emir

Why Villamartin?  There are many better areas to live.....

Villamartin is a built up sprawling conjoined area with no decent bus services and only one place for entertainment, the Plaza!!

Look how you would get to places like the beach or shopping centres..........

Villamartin is a cheap area to purchase property because its out the way of everything. Reconsider!!

Thank you. Which areas do you think are better? Or more teen friendly?

I honestly can't recommend any areas that I haven't spent time at, but other posters who live in other places will.

I can comment on Villamartin as I've spent a lot of time there visiting my sister who lived there many years. Villamartin is a very large built up area around golf courses. You have to be fairly fit as most of the sprawling estate is on hilly ground.

I'm sure your teenager children will want to spend time at the beach areas but the bus services are limited to the main street, there are no bus routes in the estates! So it's a trek to any bus stop. Bars/ restaurants / entertainment venues are limited, those that are there can take some walking to (and from) .......

You will definitely need to have a car to get to any worthwhile supermarket. La Zenia shopping centre is extremely popular in that area but you will need to use your car, if parking is available...

There are many better areas to live in the local regions.

My sister now lives back in the UK.

I live just down from Villamartin in Los Dolses, about a 5-10 minute walk. There is a large Dialprix supermarket there which caters for expats and is used by the numerous nationalities that live in the area. They are building a LIDL supermarket on the land next to Dialprix which will be open this year. Across and slightly down from Dialprix there are plans to build a health clinic in the next 12 months. In Villamartin Plaza itself there is a smallish supermarket which has plenty of choice but not ideal for a weekly shop (imo).

Within 3km there are numerous other bars, restaurants and supermarkets and another restaurant area, La Fuente Commercial Centre.

La Zenia Boulevard https://zeniaboulevard.es/en with it's many shops, restaurants, large supermarket and many entertainment areas is about 3.5 km.

The nearest beach area is about 4km, with good walks available up and down the coast to other beaches.

There are three golf courses in the area plus a relatively new Greenlands mini golf centre/restaurant about 1.5km away from Villamartin centre. There is occasionally music in the Villamartin Palza but many bars/restaurants in the area have music events on a weekly basis.

To be honest few people walk to do shopping as it is usually too hot, a car is essential, as it is in most areas of Costa Blanca. Though mid-70's I can easily walk the triangle of Los Dolses, Villamartin Plaza and La Fuente  Commercial centre, you and your younger family will have no problems, ignore Steve's comments making it sound like tackling the Swiss Alps!

The population in the area is a good mix with people from the UK, Scandinavia, Belgium, Holland, Germany, etc and of course Spanish. There are a good selection of bars and restaurants in Villamartin Plaza and Los Dolses within easy walking distance.

Property prices have increased significantly in the last 2-3 years so be prepared when house hunting.

Good luck with you search.

Aitch.

Most certainly have a long holiday to get the true feel of the place and surrounding. Find out how your teenagers will get to any entertainment venues and back as it can get very expensive for taxis everywhere!!

I would also recommend Los Dolses area, we have an apartment opposite Dialprix and have owned it for almost 5 years, although it is a holiday home.

You can walk to most things from there, yes the beach is a long walk, but parking there is not always easy in peak season, so you may jump in the car and drive to a beach further away that has better parking.

I assume that you are English speaking, although you may plan on learning Spanish it is easy to get by with only English in this area.

Best of luck!

Sorry, but I have to pull you up on the "Alps" simile. I'm in El Galan. Next door to Villamartin. It's a 10 minute Jog (I'm late 60s). BUT it's a bloody sight longer going back home, due to 2 very steep hills!!!

Going the other way, to the Stray Sod in La Fuente for example (and I've done it more times than I can remember), it's down hill most of the way, but obviously the return trip involves tackling 2 steep inclines - one of them known affectionately as Heart Attack Hill.

The fact is the very nature of this entire region is........hilly! At some point, you're gonna be testing your heart rate!

Yes, I've been tested a few times with the hilly Villamartin estates. The OP needs to think about any old age problems that may arise regarding walking everywhere. You have to walk a good distance up some hills to catch a bus (if you don't have a car) to a lot of the beach/shopping/entertainment venues. Aitch must be very fit!!!
