Hi,

Can anyone recommend any typical old style Spanish villages/towns in the area to visit? I'm in Villamartin and would like to experience real Spain rather than the urbanizations from time to time. Looking for places with a nice square with a few bars and cafes, or a castle, or nice old church. I know Cartagena is nice, but just wondered if anyone had visited anywhere closer that fits the bill. Got a car so happy to drive inland for 45 mins or so.

Thanks in advance....

You could try some of the local tour companies, they do a lot of cheap day trips to some of the older towns. Would save you driving, and you will see a lot more during your trip.

I think the old town in Orihuela would fit what you're looking for. So would Elche old town. They're both well worth looking around.

Plenty of traditional places nearby - Los Montesinos, Benijofer, Algorfa, San Miguel, Jacarilla, Bisastro, Callosa, San Javier.  All have older village/town centres and traditional squares.

Jacarilla has an old Palace and gardens which are being renovated

Novelda - lovely monastery

Bullas, Mula, .Calasparra All worth visiting. The more inland you go the more Spanish villages and towns you will find

Also worth visiting is the Moroccan tea room. Opens after dusk but beautiful place - difficult to find.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

If you want authentic old traditional Spanish villages you would need to go inland Andalucia to see the white villages.
