Why are British people who are legally resident in Spain called ex pat's as opposed to immigrants?

An Asian or African person relocating to the UK legally would be called an immigrant. Why is this please?
I think we should hold a poll to ascertain people's thoughts.

Not sure what you are setting out to achieve, except an argument. Have you paid for an argument ?. (Unless you have seen the relevant monty python sketch, the latter was wasted, sorry). But seriously, what on earth made you think that one up ?.

It just really annoys me ...maybe it's because I'm Welsh and not English . The English have always in my humble opinion considered themselves to be somewhat superior to everyone else.
I suppose it's the racist angle that I don't agree with.
Many like myself I have to say do not speak Spanish because we expect the locals to speak English.
Can you consider for a moment the abuse and criticism that many people who choose to live in the UK from overseas have to contend with if they don't speak English.
We from the UK who live in Spain are immigrants who just like to dress up the fact and call themselves ex pat's. It's such an inoffensive and flowery term and that's why I'm not surprised that so many people choose to use it.
