Tiling Rooftop Solarium

I  will  give   my  view  on  your Soluriam. I  have worked  in  Construction  for 40 years in  Europe 

If  old  tiles  are badly  cracked  I  would  remove  them.  In  doing this  you will  damage   membrane 

I would  use membrane  no  matter   what  method   you  decide  to go. I  would  also  like to use  expanding  bead. If  you  think  about  it if you do  not use membrane and say in a few years  time you develop   a  leak where do you stand.  You will  be back at  square 1  Expanding bead allows  for  movement  and I  would  guess your Soluriam  is  surrounded  by 4  solid  walls  so  tiles can  only cracked  if  movement  occurs. I  would  also add  do  not  under any  circumstances  when  work is  complete   allow  any  type  of  fixtures  to  be drilled and screwed  to new Soluriam  roof as  you are  making   a  small  hole  in  membrane  and  water  cold leak through.  Also  tell  tradesperson  doing  your  work  to  make  a good  fall  in  roof  towards  the  Water outlet   or  gullet   most times these are in  middle  of  Soluriam  roof. 

Hope  you  can  understand  what I  wrote  if  not  fell free to PM  me.  But  please use or  insist   on  Membrane  it  might save  you  headache  going into  the  future. 

The poster above is correct and this would be the best solution. 

However, if the tiles are cracked but not loose then it could be possible to tile over the existing tiles. You would need to check that doorways and drainage would be unaffected by the increase in thickness. You will also need to use the correct adhesive to ensure the tiles stick and I would recomend the use of a good quality flexible frost resistant grout. 

Another cheaper (very temporary) solution is to apply a sealant to the area.

Definitely use a membrane to prevent water coming through the old one and then tile over and grout

yes

everything taken up and renewed

the membrane was rubber and about 2/4 mm thick so far superior than old one

Was it very expensive, you don’t have to tell me if you rather not
