Travelling from the UK

Hi All,

My partner and myself will be travelling from the UK to start a new life in Villamartin in March next year.

My partner has two cats so we are planning to buy a Spanish registered car in the UK and drive over via the Portsmouth - Bilbao/Santander ferry.

I will be purchasing the car mid February and driving in the UK for a few weeks.

Has anyone experienced the same. Other question is, who is the best spanish insurance provider that will enable me to insure the car so i will be covered in the UK for a few weeks and then Spain moving forward

I would be interested to hear of anyone's experience if they have done the same thing, or alternatively any advice on the matter.

I'm not sure where you are going to buy this 'Spanish Registered' car in the UK. Unfortunately as a UK citizen it is illegal to drive a 'Spanish registered' car on UK roads. A Spanish person can drive a Spanish registered car in the UK if the vehicle is insured in Spain, for a period of not more than 6 months. Likewise, a UK citizen can drive a UK registered car in Spain if it is insured in the UK in the same way. You cannot do what you are planning, as no insurance company either in the UK or Spain will insure you as it is illegal. You can simply drive your UK car to Spain with UK insurance, but after 6 months you would have to either take the car back to the UK or have it transferred onto Spanish Plates and re-insure it in Spain. I have been through all this with the DVLA as I was planning to do it with a motorcycle.

Apart from what others have said buying a Spanish regged car in UK is fraught with pitfalls which could see you end up with a car you can neither drive nor sell (or even have seized) so unless you are 100% conversant with the processes and legalities of buying and transferring ownership of such a car, which very evidently you are not, then the only advice can be DON'T do it.

Paradoxically if you are determined to buy a LHD car in UK you're safer buying anything BUT Spanish!
