Hia what's the best way of heating ya home in the winter ??

I went the whole hog and had a combi boiler put in with rads. Lovely and relatively cheap to run. Also, a gas fire (like the sort we have in the uk) is excellent. Flueless or with a flue.

End of November to end of Feb are cold. During the day outside is tolerable. However Spanish homes are not built for cold and are difficult to heat and retain the heat.

I liked it during the day but coldness of the house was too much. In the UK we have energy efficient homes with central heating. ...

Yes.

Spanish houses, specially in that area are built for Summer.

Alicante is very humid and the cold gets in your bones, as we say here.

I recomend natural gas, and the Spanish goverment together with the city halls are subsidizing Natural Gas pipelines so all your complexes have the posibility to install the natural gas in your houses, and the central heating so winters are softer and nicer:)

Villamartin, Algorfa, Orihuela Costa, and so on already have natural gas. Natural gas kw is 6 cents, while Electricity is 14-19 cents /Kw. Inverters are extraexpemsive and only heat the top of the room..;(. Natural gas heating is confortable for those months and you think you are in Englang, and will not spend a cold winter in Sunny Alicante in the morning, and cold and humid Alicante at night..

If you like a quote on central heating for a whole house I could advise.

Regards,

Carolina

No. If I was i would probably invest in central heating. I do about 2 mths a year out there. Lock the house up end of November then open it up Feb 1/2 term

An alternative could be gas fires - not the portable types - either flueless or with flue. They work with both natural and propane. We supply many different models and it could be the economical option for you.

By all means pm me for more details.

If you've got a fireplace, or can fit a free-standing log fire, then that is far and away the most effective way of heating your house.

There's a few minutes work each day in cleaning it and re-stocking the log basket, but the amount of heat a proper log fire produces is excellent. Our's is rated at well over 20 kilowatts. The thought of what that would cost in electricity or gas just amuses me!...

...

Hi

do you have a log stove, if so how much can I expect to pay for installation and is the wood in Spain reasonable to buy.

Yes, we have a big built-in log fire, it's our main source of heating, and it's rated at over 20 kilowatts.

A good one isn't cheap - to get an idea of prices have a look at the Leroy Merlin and BricoDepot websites.

Last autumn we spend €290 on logs. I always go for encina - holm oak - which is 16 cents a kilo. You can buy other types of wood down to 9 cents a kilo, but you'd burn more of the cheaper stuff than you would encina.

When we bought the logs, I expected that we'd only actually use three-quarters of them, as we have done in previous years. However, Margaret's got cancer (from which she's slowly recovering) and has lost a lot of weight. Probably because of that she feels cold all the time, so the fire is kept stoked up more than in previous years. I'm hoping that next winter we'll only be burning about €200 of logs.

As an aside, it's a lot more interesting to watch a log fire than to watch a Dimplex radiator!
