Hi everyone,   My name is Paul and my wifes name is Janette and for a few years we have dreamt of living on the Costa Blanca probably the villa martin area.We have visited a few times and love it but over the last year or so ive had 3 heart attacks,I have moderate heart failure, kidney failure which has now almost fully recovered, double heart by pass, had 2 stents fitted ,water on my lungs twice, ive got type 1 diabetes and im still alive and kicking,im not looking for sympathy just if anybody thinks i could get full medical cover and vaguely how much am i looking at should i apply to come and live in Spain.Things are more complex now with Covid and Brexit thrown into the mix but id like to see if its an impossible dream or not.Im not rich but we are comfortable im 60 and just retired and my wife is 63.Please just a little insight from the good ex pats of the costa brava.Thank You Paul (Noz or Nozzer).

Hi Paul,

Given your medical history, I think you need to speak to a broker who can look at the whole of the PHI market for you.  I´d suggest:

https://www.bsureinsurance.com/insurance/personal/health-insurance-in-spain/

It would also be worth you speaking to Alfonso, of Gran Alacant Insurance Services, who advertises on here.  I believe he only works with one health insurer, but he´s had very good reviews from members:

The alternative is that you have to trawl the market yourself and there are a lot of companies providing this type of cover.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Wiganlass60/Paul

My missus has Type 1, with the usual associated problems, and is of similar age, and also has hearing problems.

She is able to claim  ESA/PIP from the UK whilst resident in Spain, which also means she gets free healthcare in Spain, which means I do as well. I've no idea if your own health issues would qualify you for these benefits, but it would cost you nothing to look into it.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Good point about Exportable Benefits.  While the Trade and Co-operation agreement enabled the ongoing availability of the S1 form for UK citizens moving to the EU after Brexit, the UK's NHS website suggests that the right to an exportable benefit has changed (but not for people already claiming it pre-Brexit, whose rights are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement):

https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/moving-abroad/planning-your-healthcare/#:~:text=The%20rules%20have%20changed%20around,Carer's%20Allowance%20(CA)

As you suggest, definitely worth Paul's wife contacting the Overseas Healthcare Team to ask whether she qualifies:

Kind regards,

Kim
