Hi

I'm considering moving permanently to Spain from Ireland later this year .one of the requirements by Spanish law is that I have private health insurance .I received an international health insurance quote from VHI today for €2800 a year .I'm a single 55 year old man .my question is this,is it easy to get health insurance over in spain once i arrive there and is health insurance cheaper in spain ?

Thanks

Hi , we’re 56 & 60 , we’re with Salus , have a few pre existing conditions which aren’t covered by them which is normal. For both of us it was 1700 euros for the year.

We got ours from recommendations on this forum. The company is Gran Alacant Insurance ( I understand they deal in other insurances as well like motor & home ) & the gentleman man there is Alfonso Castro. He was kind enough to bring our documents to us in Algorfa as we had a few problems with our post . His phone number is 0034966390830

Assuming no unfortunate pre-existing conditions, at your age you should pay around 1000 Euros/year for a policy that will be adequate for Residency.

You should bear in mind ....

It isn't just about cost. Don't just choose the cheapest policy. When you gain Residency/Visa/TIE, your PHI will, at least for a while, become your only source of healthcare. So accessibility and quality are the important factors.

My wife and I have our health insurance with DKV. My wife became seriously ill in 2019, and they have been absolutely fantastic.

BUT we have had to travel to obtain treatment and tests, mostly to the Quiron Hospital in Murcia. We have also used (I think) 8 or 9 other medical facilities in Murcia, Elche and Torrevieja.

This seems to be quite normal. We have met numerous other people "doing the rounds" - each having different insurers.

Into the detail .... insurers may quote the various clinics and hospitals that they use, but in reality, they pick and choose exactly what services they contract for at which hospital. So if your insurer's brochure says that they use (say) Quiron or IMED hospitals/clinics, the city you have to go to depends on the medical service you need.

We use a GP in our village (not the health centre) and she acts as the gateway into the DKV system - and she is very good at it.

Our local GP works with DKV (which may be why our local insurance broker recommended DKV). So it seems that the most important thing is to have an insurer who works with your local GP.

We have a neighbour who uses a different insurer. Her nearest insurer-affiliated GP is 50 minutes away by car.

It is easy to purchase health insurance, but I think the new (post-Brexit, and if you have a UK passport) visa processes require it to be in place prior to application. The application takes place in the UK now.

If your passport is ROI, just purchase your healthcare when you get here.

Best wishes ...

You also need to check the small print of what you are buying very carefully; all the PHI companies offer different levels of cover, but virtually none of them cover the cost of medication outside hospitalisation ie standard prescriptions. Some of the give a small allowance towards this.

Also bear in mind that all dental and optical is private here and may be an optional ‘extra’ on your PHI.
