Just been turned down for medical insurance

As far as we know none of the insurance companies will provide cover for pre-existing conditions.

After a year of residency you can consider buying into the Spanish healthcare system that has no exclusions.

A word of caution, read the small print very carefully.

As mentioned few if any insurers will cover pre-existings and for the rare ones who will the premiums are likely to be ruinous.

Note also that many application forms for insurance (not just medical)  include a question something like “have you been declined or refused insurance elsewhere" to which your only honest response now has to be "yes" and that alone may be enough to bar you from securing cover.

This is really a Catch 22. I am 75 and NOBOBY will provide health insurance unless you have NEVER had any illness! I had prostate cancer 15 years ago - no recurrance and I was turned down. If you had chicken pox 60 years ago you are also disqualified!! Thus if Brexit leads to no deal, there will be 500,000 English returning to Engalnd!!!

With the NHS already on it's knees and resources overwhelmed the very last thing UK wants or needs is for XXX,000 sickly coffin dodging pensioners to return to finish it off. 

Also there is a movement in Spain to provide health care to all legal residents making private insurance a thing of the past.

Yes, perhaps all will be well in the end but I don't trust any politician and will believe it when I see it! If you want the truth reverse everything thay say.
