We have a property in El Galan and are looking to live there permanently next year. My husband receives state pension in UK so can get an S1 form but I will need to get private healthcare insurance. I have looked on line but find it very confusing! A friend of ours has just got his Spanish residency and paid €1,800 for a year's medical cover. Is this about the normal price?

I strongly advise to wait until Bexit takes place too.
Too many scare stories and too many possibilities of where things may change.

Hello Lynda hope you are well.
Everything Kimmy says is correct so don’t let some spiv insurance company sell you something you do not need. BREXIT is the main problem here and the whole picture could change in the future, but nobody knows, not even Boris with his shirt hanging out.
No deal could mean S1 disappears and also EHIC.
There is ‘’supposed’’ to be a new law in Spain ‘’free healthcare for everyone’’ this may have been a sketch from ‘’not the 9 o’clock news’’.
At the moment many residents abuse the EHIC pretending to be tourists and turning up at the hospital with their EHIC and passport complaining of having a cold, and they get away with it.
It’s a case of watch this space.

In respect of Nakabandi's reference to "Free healthcare....", the bottom line is that we're unlikely to qualify, for the reasons explained in this thread:
Free SIP Card for all residents
As for the S1 disappearing, that may be part of the fall-out of a No Deal Brexit, but our EHICs (EUROPEAN Health Insurance Card) will cease to be valid once the UK leaves the EU - the clue is in the name 😉
That said, the UK and Spain had already reached agreement for reciprocal protection of citizens' rights (including health care) and hopefully this will still stand in the event of No Deal with the EU (especially as, in an exchange of letters between Stephen Barclay and Michel Barnier earlier this month, Michel Barnier refused to ring-fence the protection of citizens' rights in the event of a No Deal).
As I said, best to monitor developments on the www.Gov.uk website - you can bookmark the 'Preparing for Brexit' page and sign up for email alerts.
