What are the inheritance laws in Spain.  I understand they can be difficult.  Thanks

It's important you get a good English speaking lawyer to make your will. Ensure it stipulates it is a wil according to 'English law' then it is just the same as any will in the uk.

I had mine done last week by a fabulous young and well clued up lawyer, give her a call (drop my name ....Steve and Chery Turner please)

Carmen conejero, 609 31 84 55.  She really is spot on and very reasonable.

Hope this helps

Steve

Chezste is quite correct that your will needs to include the stipulation that it be enacted i.a.w. English law. If this isn't done, then your estate would be spread all over among your family members.

Before going the solicitor route (expensive!) I'd talk to your local notary office, as some of them do it without needing a solicitor.

Alternatively, talk nicely to friends out here who have a Spanish will and get a copy. Then reword it to suit your details, and go along to the notary.

If you've got assets in the UK which are already covered by a will, you could include in your Spanish will a sentence stating that it only covers assets held in Spain.

Yes...100€ pp but the notary was 150€, that included copy passports (a great idea enabling to keep your original passport safe and locked away) they were only about 7-10€ each.

As others have said it is vital that your Solicitor drafts a Will for both yourself and your partner covering all your Spanish goods particularly property. When you are happy with the content of the Will it needs to be taken to the Notary and signed in their presence. If you Solicitor is any good they will arrange the appointment with the Notary and accompany you to the meeting. All this is important as Spanish laws are different from in the U.K. and your Spanish Will be make things simpler than if you only have your U.K. Will when you are faced with an already distressing situation.

IMPORTANT!!  ensure the will is drafted in accordance to English law!  You solicitor will do this at no extra cost.  And mention in your uk will that your overseas property is covered by a separate will.
