Hi, thinking if relocating to spain, will have my 11 year old grandson with me, he will not cope in a mainstream school due to autism and sensory processing disorder. Therefore thinking of homeschooling him. Not to a curriculum but just about life, cooking, geography, history, and trying to learn Spanish.

Is anyone else doing the same thing, and if so, how is it going or what problems we might face etc.

Kind regards.

Hi

We moved to Spain last spring after 6 years in the USA where my son was homeschooled. We followed a structured programme from Oak Meadow. With hindsight he learnt more following the Oak Meadow programme each year than he has at school. Technically, homeschooling is not allowed in Spain under the current Law but I think that if you don't register him on the Pardon and if challenged can demonstrate you are following an accredited course of study like Oak Meadow where he would be assigned a teacher who would support you and grade the work he produces I don't think you'll have to many problems. He will also need to be learning Spanish to satisfy the Spanish authorities!

Because my son's now a teenager we decided we wanted hm to attend a physical school so he could mix with other kids his own age. We chose Phoenix International School in San Miguel de Salinas. Its about 5 - 6 kms from Villamartin. My son has been there for nearly a year now, and we are very happy with the community at the school. It feels like a family, there are only about 100 kids aged between 5 and 18 years and they follow the English system. With the exception of two Spanish language teachers all the staff are from the UK and we are happy with the quality of schooling my son is receiving. Its worth looking it up and talking to either Lindsay or Samantha at the school as you consider your options.
