NIE
I have been told I need to renew my NIE after 5 years. Is this true? We bought our property in 2010 and got our NIE at the time.
Thanks for any advice.

Untrue...
Your NIE is a lifetime number. You don't have to renew it.

Hello Forest2
No, you have been given wrong info - NIEs are for life, no need to renew, Ive had mine 19years!

Hi Bosque2,
It depends who told you, because the Spanish often, incorrectly, refer to residency as the NIE. The NIE does not need to be renewed, but your residency (TIE) needs to be renewed after 5 years, if it is "residencia temporal", or after 10 years if it´s "residencia pemanente".
Kind regards,
Kim

Are you sure it was n.i.e. because you have that for life, perhaps they were referring to the padron?

Pardons are to be renewed after 5 years unless....
You move house/apartment or need a Padron when you apply for residency or purchasing a car etc. Etc. ( then the Padron is required to be less than 3 months old)

Thank You one and All for clarifying this for me. I now know my informant was unsure of the name of the NIE/TIE/ etc etc How ever I have emailed the Orihuela Costa town hall to ask how I go about replacing my missing NIE original document. I am a non resident with ownership of a property in the Orihuela Costa area. I do have photocopies of both I and my wifes NIE Certs But how do I go about getting replacements. They havent been stolen or lost outside but cant get a hold of them in our spain apartment or our permanenet UK residence.
Thanks again

Hi Bosque2,
These are issued by the Foreigners' office of the National Police. Go to your nearest Foreigners' office (you'll probably need to make an appointment because of the current Covid restrictions), with your passports and the copies of your NIEs and ask for duplicates (duplicados). You'll need to complete form EX-15 (the same form you completed when you applied for the originals) and pay a small fee. You may be required to have reported the loss first at your Local Police station and provide the 'denuncia' report with your application.
There's more detailed information, including a link to the EX-15 form, on the Spanish government website:
Kind regards,
Kim

Hi Bosque2
I can't remember ever being asked for the original NIE cert.
I usually either say it, write it down, or show my driving license (Spanish).
What do you think you might need it for?
Cheers

Hi Steve,
Before we became resident in Spain, I wanted to buy a car and was asked for my NIE by the dealer - I gave him the paper certificate, so I don't know whether just telling him the number would have sufficed. (I was also told that I'd need a Padron certificate to buy a car here, but that's bunkum 😄)
I'm always asked for my NIE when making large purchases, ordering online, sending or receiving registered post, etc. etc., but like you, I now only give the number and have never been asked to show the NIE document.
Kind regards,
Kim
