Hi,

I have been here 8 years and the only time I've renewed my Padron is if I'm asked to produce one. You will need a recent Padron (within 3 months) for some purchases and for applying for TIE etc.

Otherwise I wouldn't worry about renewal.

In Orihuela Costa you present yourself at the town hall every 5 years to renew your padrón. You can get new certificates at any time either online or in person within these 5 years. There will come a day when you can't get a certificate without going down to renew. I know this because it happened to me and my friend this year. The two certified letters that the town hall insist were sent to me were not delivered. I don´t know if this is a random check of some residents or if it happens to everyone, all I know is that it happened to us. I only found out when I was unable to get a new padrón certificate online.

It's not a pardon!! It's padron, similar to the electoral role in UK.

Hi Rob,

Yes, you should re-register your Padrón.  Failure to do so will likely trigger a letter from your Town Hall to which, if you fail to respond, will result in you being de-registered.  (We received such letters for the previous owners of our property, who failed to de-register before moving back to the UK.)  The Town Halls have to do this to verify the population of their municipality for the funding they claim from Central Government.

Foreigners resident in Spain must renew their Padrón every 2 years, or 5 years, depending on their situation:

-  If you're from a country within the EU, or have a permanent residence permit (10 years), you need to renew it every 5 years, and

-  those from countries outside the EU with a temporary residence permit (5 years) need to renew it every 2 years.

Kind regards,

Kim
