I am completely perplexed at the lack of taxi's in the Villamartin area. I have stayed many times on the plaza and surrounding areas and I have never been able to get a taxi. They arrive at the rank ad hoc, even after phoning they dont arrive.I managed to get to San Miguel but was told there is only 2 taxi's there and one was at the airport. Is there some reason why there is such a shortage, are they government run or something? Couldnt even get back from Aldi. The manager there kindly ordered me one but it took 40 minutes to arrive.

Could anyone enlighten me please

The problem is that most of the taxis in Orihuela costa are at la Zenia Boulevard... The San Miguel does have 2 taxis, the thing is that they are very territorial. For example, a Torrevieja taxi cannot charge in cabo Roig, as they would be denounced by others and get a fine, they could even end up without their licence. The best in these cases is to ask a taxi driver to wait for you while you shop, and then drive you back home, as well as it will be cheaper for you than getting two taxis. It is not gubernamental thing, the licences are sold, so then the owner buys a car and hires a chófer and that's how they work.
